Description
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is currently hiring for Security Guards at our George Washington Bridge location! Working under close supervision, the Security Guard observes activity at a particular post and reports any unusual activities to his or her supervisor.
Security Guards perform routine monitoring, reporting duties, and follow specific guidelines for observing and reporting incidents.
Responsibilities :
Security Guards are responsible for reporting malfunctions of equipment that may impact the security or well-being of the facility to supervisor and / or facility management.
In addition, they verify pedestrian and vehicle authorization for access through an assigned post and may be required to monitor CCTVs or other similar equipment and report irregularities as observed.
Security Guards will perform other related duties, as required.
- Security Guards hired through this recruitment will be assigned to George Washington Bridge location.
- This is a 24-hour, 7 days-a-week operation that will involve working rotating shifts and / or irregular shifts and holidays.
- Security Guards interact with the traveling public, Port Authority facilities' and outside agencies' staff with courtesy and professionalism.
Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a testing and interview process taking place between April 30 and May 10, 2024 .
Qualifications :
Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position :
- High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
- Valid Driver's License.
- A minimum of 2 years' experience in any one or any combination of the following fields :
- Security Guard / Watchman,
- Police Officer -or- a member of the United States Military in a military police or security position
- A combination of experience and college credits (minimum 32 credits per year) from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice or Police Science can be considered.
Desired :
Ideal candidates will present the following profile :
Security Officer Registration Act (SORA) License

The starting hourly rate for the Security Guard position is $20.54 (subject to collective bargaining agreement).

Selection Process :
The Port Authority will be hosting Security Guard recruitment interviews for our George Washinton Bridge facility. Please consider below dates before you apply :
- The deadline to apply for interested candidates is Tuesday April 30, 2024 .
- Candidates will have until Tuesday May 7, 2024 , to register and take the written exam.
- We are looking to conduct immediate interviews on May 9th and May 10th .
Qualified candidates will have to undergo a comprehensive background check which will include a Sterling background check and Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) background check as is required by the Security Operations Department.
For the PAPD background check you will need to provide all of the required valid documentation listed below. Candidates must bring all the following to their PAPD fingerprinting appointment :
- Birth Certificate
- Valid Driver's License
- Social Security Card
- Official Sealed Transcript
- Military DD214 (If Applicable)
- Certificate of Naturalization (If Applicable)
- One (1) Proof of Residence
