As a Network Engineer, you will be ensuring that the Port of Seattle's network environments operate efficiently and securely. You will also be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the Port's network infrastructure (routers, switches, firewalls, wireless, load balancers), as well as troubleshooting and resolving any issues that arise.

  • You will understand business needs and translate them into network architecture / design that is scalable, reliable, flexible, and secure.
  • You will work closely with other teams, such as Information Security and other Information & Communication Technology (ICT) departments to ensure the network architecture and security is in alignment with the overall technology strategy of the Port of Seattle.
  • You will respond promptly to any IT outages during your on-call rotation.
  • You will participate during all phases of capital projects where wired and wireless network services are required, including design, implementation, and optimization.
  • You will build strategic working relationships with different stakeholders, business partners, team / project members and customers.
  • You will articulate ideas and technical solutions to different audiences in a positive, supportive and productive manner.
  • You will produce clear and concise technical documentation for end-users, vendors, co-workers and other technical staff utilizing effective professional technical writing proficiency. You will follow Port Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) formatting.

Who you are :

  • Experienced - You have two (2) years of experience in Information Technology.
  • Desired - We hope you have a bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or business administration. We also hope you are a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and a Check Point Certified Security Administrator (CCSA).

  • Expertise - You can design and implement network systems, including Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), Virtual Private Network (VPN), and other networking protocols and implement complex network systems, including routing and switching, firewalls, load balancing, and network segmentation. You have knowledge of network routing and switching protocols, such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), and Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) and Internet Protocol (IP) address management and Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) design.
  • Analytical Problem Solver - You have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex network issues. You can configure and manage network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers. You have the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues, including performance, security, and connectivity issues.
  • Efficient Communicator - You possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Highly Organized - You are able to develop and maintain technical documentation such as network and security diagrams, configurations, and procedures.
  • Technically Skilled - You have knowledge and experience with network management tools such as Nagios XI, Cisco Catalyst Center (formerly DNA Center) and Cisco Hardware Infrastructure. You have working knowledge of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) setup design and setup. You also have familiarity with cloud computing and related technologies, such as Microsoft Entra, Cisco Smart Licensing, etc. You also have familiarity with Check Point Security Gateway products.
  • What else you need to know :

  • Work Schedule - Your normal work schedule will be Monday - Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m. (40 hours per week), subject to changes. Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. You will also be required to be on a rotational on-call schedule. You may be required to work any and all assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Work Environment - This work will take place in-office, requiring you to be onsite no less than 50% of the time. You will have the ability to work remotely at Management's discretion, after completing the training period.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement - Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • Security Requirements - As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
  • Security Requirements - You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire.
  • Security Requirements - In this role, you will be required to access Port of Seattle Police Department equipment, office locations, systems and / or vehicles. In compliance with Federal and State laws as the successful candidate, you will be required to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) criminal history background check.
