The Opportunity: Assistant Operations Manager
The Port of Virginia - Virginia International Terminals is seeking an Assistant Operations Manager to supervise terminal operations with the goal of maintaining a safe working environment, while maximizing productivity and meeting departmental objectives by promoting safety awareness and regulatory compliance (OSHA), managing ILA labor, controlling operation costs and maximizing workforce efficiency. Coordinate efforts between steamship lines, agents, stevedores, trucking companies, railroads and all other departments.
What You'll Do: Responsibilities
- Provides guidance and supervision to ILA Union personnel and ensures all safety procedures are adhered to.
- Influence innovation from team members and colleagues for productivity improvements to include operating procedures internally and externally, equipment assignments, and work practices. Recommends and implements procedural enhancements to reduce costs and increase productivity.
- Prepares and reviews reports, memorandums and other correspondence.
- Allocates equipment to various ILA operators and prioritizes work assignments based on operational needs. Makes adjustments to work assignments throughout the day as needed.
- Develop and maintain lines of communication while assisting in problem solving issues. The objective/goal is to be accessible to internal and external customers and the trucking community to cultivate a rapport beneficial to the Port of Virginia while building strong customer relations.
- Ensures employee relations and problems are properly handled. Meets with employees to discuss status of work, work problems, etc. and makes independent decisions regarding employee relations and disciplinary actions. Meets with business agents when necessary to address performance and disciplinary concerns and actions. Forwards information to the manager for awareness.
- Exercises discretion in resolving complaints, grievances and concerns as those are brought to their attention.
- Rewards and disciplines colleagues for compliance/non-compliance of the Terminal Safety Infraction Program.
- Ensures compliance with all security and environmental regulations and policies within work area at all times. This includes properly addressing issues through action or reporting matter and concerns to Manager. Other task and assignments as directed.
Who You Are: Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be able to work any shift assigned in a 24-hour period, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to make quick decisions in an ever-changing environment.
- Ability to establish a plan of action and coordinate efficient execution.
- Basic PC Skills.
- Ability to inspire others to accomplish goals and encourage high standards of performance.
- Experience in transportation or operations.
- Clean driving record.
