Description
The editor for Kingstree Communications handles all journalism, storytelling and content curation for The News in Kingstree, SC. This includes content for the weekly print product, Kingstreenews.com and social media platforms. The editor will be heavily engaged in the community within Kingstree and Williamsburg County at-large and should strive to develop relationships with key business, civic and political leaders in the area. The position should have a journalism, writing or communications background.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Write stories for The News to run in print and online, on various topics including but not limited to local government, downtown development, business and real estate news, and events.
- Monitor audience traffic and interaction with Kingstreenews.com, on desktop and mobile
- Continually develop strategies to increase website traffic and reader engagement across online and social media platforms
- Bolster coverage by handling day-to-day assignments and producing high-quality community news content and photos that are relevant to our reader base
- Work with staff to edit stories and make them relevant and important to our reader base with attention to detail
- Plan newspaper content to ensure there is ample content for the weekly print product and that Kingstreenews.com content offerings remain fresh.
- Review, edit and approve print product layouts and page proofs.
- Shoot and edit photographs as needed
- Manage newspapers’ social media accounts
- Establish collaborative relationships with community leaders
- Attend community events and meetings on behalf of Kingstree Communications
- Promote positive image of the newspaper and its initiatives
- Collaborate and work effectively with other newsrooms and departments within Evening Post Publishing Newspaper Group
- Monitor newsroom budgets and expense profiles within overall Kingstree Communications budget to ensure financial efficiencies
- Practice effective time-management for copy flow and production.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Requirements, minimum education level, and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications
- 2 years in journalism, communications or content creation
- Experience using digital Content Management Systems (CMS) a plus
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Superb social media skills
- Strong writing, editing, AP style and libel law skills
- Proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and other news design programs as well as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
- Deep understanding of digital and print media, including social media
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Good customer relation skills with the ability to easily and professionally speak and work with readers and the public daily.
- Ability to prioritize workload and self-manage projects, handle multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines
- Knowledge of the community and surrounding cities a plus
Physical Requirement:
Regularly required to sit for long periods of time; close eye work on computer screen; required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, bend and stoop; light to moderate lifting 15-30 pounds.
The worker is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions, which provide protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is sometimes subject to outside environmental conditions.
Local travel is required.
