Job Opening for Executive Director
TPI is seeking a new Executive Director (ED). A non-profit mental health organization that recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary, TPI has three training programs and a community clinic providing depth psychotherapy. The Institute hosts continuing education events and provides opportunities for psychotherapists to network. We are looking for an individual with fundraising experience who has managed small to medium non-profits. The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader with excellent interpersonal skills and an understanding of mental health services and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Executive Director Job Description & Duties
- Manages finances, including creating a budget
- Works with CPA to file county, state and federal tax documents
- Creates a development plan, including fundraising
- Manages our office building and tenants
- Provides community outreach, community-building and partnerships, and public relations
- Oversees compliance with the TPI bylaws, implements strategic planning goals along with the TPI Board, and engages in planning for organizational sustainability
- Sits on selected TPI committees and attends Board meetings
- Is responsible for the hiring and regular evaluation of all paid staff and works closely with the Director of Advanced Training Programs (DATP), the Clinical Director (CD), and the Administrative Coordinator
- Communicates regularly with the membership by email, attends the annual meeting and other public events, is part of the new members’ welcoming team and participates in the onboarding of new cohorts in the training programs
Required Skills and Values
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in non-profit management, social work, counseling, psychology, or related fields
- Experience managing small to medium non-profits (2-6 person staff) and building and overseeing budgets of $600K-1M
- Experience developing and maintaining fundraising programs to sustain financial solvency for an organization
- Experience with marketing and community outreach
- Experience and commitment to helping organizations embody diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)
- Appreciation and understanding of psychodynamic psychotherapy practice and mental health services
- Capacity to work effectively and collaboratively with a range of professionals (e.g., therapists, associate therapists, trainees, clinical supervisors), funders, the Board of Directors, and administrative staff
- Experience hiring and evaluating staff
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills
Work Environment
- 30 hours per week
- In-person or hybrid; at least two days on site in Berkeley, California
- Occasional evening and weekend hours
- Private office

Hiring Process and Timeline
1.The initial application period opens May 20th and will run until an ideal candidate is found.
2. Candidates who possess our required skills and values will be offered a preliminary 20-30 minute phone call to ask and answer questions.
3. Selected candidates will be invited to a series of panel interviews.
4. Candidates can expect the panel interview process to take between 4-6 weeks until a final candidate is chosen.
