The Public Theater’s mission is to produce live professional theater that inspires, educates, and connects communities. The organization’s objective is to produce high quality theatrical productions year-round in multiple venues contributing to its as well as the city’s annual financial and cultural growth. The goal is to maintain and improve upon our perception as San Antonio’s flagship theater while creating a stronger collaborative and supportive culture. “Theater for all” serves as the organization’s vision for its region.


The Public Theater seeks individuals who are inspired by theatre arts and motivated by the opportunity to serve and interact with others. Reporting to the Patron Services Manager, Patron Services Team Members play a vital role at the front line of creating The Public Theater of San Antonio’s guest experience.


The principal purpose of this position is to support the Patron Services Manager in creating a welcoming and memorable patron experience at each performance and event through excellent customer service in the roles of House Manager, Box Office Attendant, Usher, and Bartender.


We are seeking candidates who are passionate about the process of transforming arts organizations for the better. Under new Executive Artistic Director, Claudia de Vasco, the company is working to not only improve the culture of the theater - from the HR policies to the way capacity, conflict management, and work life balance is approached - but also implement many of the ideas that have arisen nationally as American Theatre has begun addressing its historic practices of exclusion, prejudice, inequity, etc. We are seeking members for our team who want to go on that journey with us, who bring ideas, who understand anti-racist cultural expectations, and who care about working with BIPOC leadership making an effort towards transformation at a historically PWI.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • House Manager
    • Greet, manage, and assist other Patron Services Team members during performances and/or events.
    • Greet and tend to patrons and their needs.
    • Maintain communication with Stage Manager to ensure adherence to schedule and protocols.
    • Maintain front-of-house facilities before, during, and after performances.
    • Submit post-performance House Manager Report through the provided form.
    • Assist with other related tasks as requested.
  • Box Office Attendant
    • Provide excellent customer service both over the phone and in person.
    • Remain knowledgeable about current and upcoming events and productions as well as general ticketing, packages/subscriptions, and other promotions and sales initiatives and policies.
    • Conduct ticketing, package/subscription, and donation transactions as needed.
    • Operate sales window for performances.
    • Provide assistance to other Patron Services Team Members as needed at performances and/or events.
    • Assist with other related tasks as requested.
  • Usher
    • Provide excellent customer service to all patrons while assisting with will-call check-in and admission to theater, including helping patrons to find their seats, providing playbills, and answering questions.
    • Provide assistance to other Patron Services Team Members as needed at performances and/or events.
    • Assist with maintenance of front-of-house facilities before, during, and after performances.
    • Assist with other related tasks as requested.
  • Bartender
    • Assist in stocking and organizing bar counters, cabinets, and coolers.
    • Make and serve beverages to patrons and process orders through Square point of sale system.
    • Submit shift and inventory reports through provided forms. 
    • Assist with maintenance of bar facilities and storage spaces as needed.
    • Assist with other related tasks as requested.


Requirements and Preferences


The qualified candidate must…

  • …hold or be willing to obtain a TABC seller/server certification.
  • …have experience with ticketing and/or patron management software OR be comfortable in learning new software and technology.

Compensation and Benefits

The Public offers an hourly rate of $10.00 with an expectation of no more than 20 hours worked weekly on average.

This position is based in San Antonio and will require in-person attendance.


The Public Theater promotes a fully vaccinated workforce. All artists, staff, and volunteers must provide proof of vaccination prior to start date and may be required per union guidelines to undergo COVID testing at the expense of the producer.
