Job Summary:
The Lab Technician & Inspector plays a crucial role in supporting engineering projects by conducting material testing, quality inspections, and field evaluations. This position ensures that construction materials meet industry standards, project specifications, and regulatory requirements. The role involves both laboratory and fieldwork, requiring precision, attention to detail, and compliance with safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Laboratory Testing & Analysis:
- Conduct material testing on soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates following ASTM and AASHTO standards.
- Perform tests such as moisture content, compaction, sieve analysis, slump, air content, and compressive strength.
- Maintain accurate test records and ensure proper sample identification and documentation.
- Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accurate test results.
2. Field Inspections & Quality Control:
- Perform on-site inspections and testing of construction materials to verify compliance with project specifications.
- Conduct field density testing using nuclear density gauges and report compaction results.
- Observe concrete placements and asphalt paving, ensuring proper procedures and material quality.
- Document and report any deviations from specifications and notify project engineers or supervisors.
3. Compliance & Documentation:
- Prepare and submit detailed inspection and test reports in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations for construction materials and testing procedures.
- Maintain laboratory certifications and adhere to safety guidelines, including OSHA standards.
- Assist with QA/QC programs to maintain accreditation and industry best practices.
4. Equipment Maintenance & Safety:
- Follow proper handling and maintenance procedures for laboratory and field testing equipment.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Participate in safety meetings and report any potential hazards or incidents.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Knowledge of construction materials testing (CMT) and industry standards (ASTM, AASHTO, DOT).
- Ability to operate laboratory and field testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to analyze test results accurately.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaboration.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) for documentation and data entry.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, or Construction Management preferred.
- 1-3 years of experience in construction materials testing or quality control (preferred but not required).
- Certifications (preferred or required, obtainable during first 3 months of employment):
- ACI (American Concrete Institute) Certification
- NICET Certification in Construction Materials Testing
- DOT Certifications for soil, concrete, or asphalt testing
- OSHA 10 or 30-Hour Safety Training
Working Conditions:
- Combination of laboratory and fieldwork, with exposure to construction sites and outdoor environments.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- Occasional travel to job sites; may have a valid driver’s license.
- Work schedule may include weekends and overtime based on project demands.
