What are the responsibilities and job description for the Editor position at The Quarto Group?
The Quarto Group’s New York team is seeking a dedicated Editor with a strong background in illustrated nonfiction publishing. The ideal candidate will have exceptional attention to detail, a passion for creativity and learning, and a collaborative spirit. This position is based in New York City, operating under a hybrid work model (with a minimum of three days on-site). While NYC-based candidates are preferred, there is an option for this role to be fully remote.
As Editor, you will serve as the editorial lead for a wide range of book topics including Lifestyle, Pop Culture, Self-Improvement, and Entertaining, guiding titles from concept to final production. This involves developmental editing of manuscripts and comprehensive reviews of designed layouts. You will also manage day-to-day editorial tasks for your books across Quarto’s New York frontlist imprints—Rock Point, Wellfleet, Castle, Epic Ink, and becker&mayer! kids. Key responsibilities include maintaining accurate metadata for your titles, handling contract and editorial service payments, and actively participating in editorial discussions, marketing brainstorms, and production meetings. Additionally, you will monitor project schedules and collaborate closely with internal teams and authors to ensure smooth project execution.
Minimum Skills, Knowledge & Abilities Required:
- Deep editorial background in books or other content-rich media spaces.
- Knowledge of publishing best practices with an emphasis on book development.
- Strong editing ability, i.e., developmental editing and thorough knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style guidelines.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks on a regular basis, balancing deadlines with a focus on standard of quality and key relationships.
- Fluidity to seamlessly work within multiple imprints which cover diverse topics.
- Ability to communicate quickly and clearly with all team members with an emphasis on understanding digital communication tools, i.e., Teams, Zoom, etc.
Education and Experience Required:
- A minimum of 4 years immersive, hands-on experience in an editorial role with an illustrated non-fiction publisher.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
