The Ranger Group, a premier U.S. engineering solutions provider supporting Aerospace & Defense, Medical Device, Electronics, and Industrial Manufacturing industries, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Embedded Software Engineer for a 12-month contract with a top-tier Commercial Aerospace client near Chicago, IL.

Must be a U.S. Permanent Resident to be considered for this role.

Your Role & Impact :

As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and developing mission-critical software for cutting-edge aerospace systems. Your expertise will help drive safety, reliability, and performance in a high-stakes environment.

Key Responsibilities :

Design, develop, and maintain high-performance embedded software aligned with DO-178C, MISRA C, or equivalent safety standards.

Define, document, and maintain clear, testable software requirements.

Conduct rigorous requirements-based testing, including unit, integration, and system-level testing.

Implement and analyze code coverage metrics (statement, branch, MC / DC).

Utilize configuration management tools (e.g., Git, SVN) to track software changes.

Design and implement software for real-time operating systems (RTOS) or low-level schedulers.

Read schematics and analyze hardware component datasheets to interface with hardware teams.

Mentor junior engineers, sharing best practices and driving technical excellence.

Drive continuous improvement in software development processes and quality assurance.

Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively across teams.

Troubleshoot and resolve complex software issues in a fast-paced environment.

What You Bring to the Team :

Education & Experience :

B.S. in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).

5 years of professional experience in safety-critical embedded software development (e.g., aerospace, medical devices).

Strong proficiency in Embedded C / C (Assembly & Python a plus).

Experience with DO-178C software development & verification processes.

Key Skills & Technologies :

Software Requirements Engineering & Testing Methodologies.

Code Coverage Analysis & Verification Techniques.

Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) & Low-Level Scheduling.

Communication Protocols : CAN, SPI, I2C, ARINC, UART.

Microcontroller Expertise : Texas Instruments, Freescale, NXP & associated IDEs.

Configuration Management Tools : Git, SVN, or similar.

Excellent communication, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities.

Preferred Qualifications (a Plus!) :

Experience with medical device software development (IEC 62304).

Knowledge of functional safety standards (ISO 26262).
