The University of Virginia's Division of Student Affairs invites applications for a Program Coordinator. The Division of Student Affairs works for and alongside students to create the distinctive student experience for which UVA is known. The University's mission to develop engaged citizen-leaders is the foundation of the Division's work. Members of the Division do this work guided by six core values - academic rigor, diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, honor, public service and student self-governance. The Division consists of over 200 employees within five units: the Office of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer, the Office of the University Dean of Students, Student Health, the University Career Center, and the Office of African-American Affairs. This is a full-time, twelve-month University Managerial and Professional Staff position with benefits.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and carrying out programmatic initiatives that focus on the transition and success of new students through Orientation and Transition Programs. Specifically, provide leadership and supervisory guidance for the Orientation Leader team, assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of Summer Orientation, and manage administrative functions to include the operation of the New Student Portal.

Position Responsibilities

Oversight of Orientation Leader Program:

  • Select, train, and supervise 4 Senior Orientation Leaders who serve as student supervisors to the larger Orientation Leader team and liaises with the Orientation professional staff.
  • Supervise and advise a team of 40 Orientation Leaders who are responsible for assisting new student in their transition to UVA.
  • Design and coordinate the training for diverse, highly student-driven Orientation Leader team.
  • Oversee and design a rehire process for Orientation Leaders who articulate a desire to return to OL position.
  • Coordinate the Orientation Leader hiring process.
  • Lead a year-long committee of former Orientation Leaders to consistently improve Summer Orientation and the Orientation Leader experience.
  • Develop and manage Orientation Leader programming budget.

Summer Orientation Planning and Implementation:

  • Assist in the coordination of 8 two-day first-year and 2 one-day transfer orientation sessions with a target audience of over 4000 students and 4000 parents/guests.
  • Serve as the coordinator for logistical aspects of the program including reservations, catering, and the New Student Portal.
  • Lead assessment efforts for Summer Orientation to include gauging student/guest satisfaction through online evaluation
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of the First Year Experience to lead Summer Orientation Planning Team to maintain consistent, year-long focus on Summer Orientation.
  • Develop and manage portions of the Summer Orientation budget.

Other Important Responsibilities:

  • Manage all Orientation & Transition Programs social media (Instagram and Facebook).
  • Support, attend and participate in divisional functions, meetings and programs.
  • Serve on various committees, attend special events, including those on evenings and weekends and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education

  • Bachelor's degree with two years of experience

Preferred Education

  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Student Services, Educational Leadership, Counseling, or a related field.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in programming for new students and a strong commitment to student development.
  • Knowledge of orientation, retention and transition programs and services on a college campus including advising and working with college students in a professional capacity.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including but not limited to, public speaking, and group facilitation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Strong supervisory and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail with excellent organizational skills, including proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, determine priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a highly student self -governed environment, and the ability to develop mutually beneficial relationships with various University partners (e.g. faculty, staff, school deans).
  • Personal characteristics including creativity, the ability to work with diverse groups of people, being a self-starter who can thrive in an environment that is developing, growing and changing.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary and recognize the need to do so independently.

Preferred Experience

  • 1-3 years of directly applicable work is preferred.

Details and Application Process

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $45,000.00 to $55,000.00 and is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is an exempt-level position with UVabenefits. Employees' benefits package highlights include:
