Job Purpose:

The Chief Engineer will lead, support, and direct all property engineering and maintenance department operations. Maintain property appearance, equipment, HVAC, plumbing, refrigeration, and electrical systems to provide maximum profitability and operational efficiency. This position plays a vital role in the operational success of The Red Lion Inn, maintaining the property's infrastructure in optimal condition through proactive maintenance and timely repairs, while enhancing guest satisfaction and safety.

Job Responsibilities:

Property Maintenance & Upkeep:

  • Oversee the maintenance of guest rooms, public areas, kitchens, and outdoor spaces.
  • Collaborate with Housekeeping, Rooms, and F&B teams to coordinate cleaning and maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain control of supplies, equipment, and inventory; purchase additional supplies as needed.
  • Utilize Alice software to track and manage repair and maintenance tasks across the property.
  • Addressing guest and staff maintenance issues promptly, diagnosing problems, and coordinating necessary repairs.


Maintenance & Repairs:

  • Conduct regular inspections of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and operating systems.
  • Perform and oversee repairs to ensure equipment and systems remain in optimal condition.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs with approved vendors.
  • Support / liaison with the Facilities Capital Project Manager with due diligence, planning and managing large-scale repair or renovation projects, including coordinating with contractors and ensuring timely completion within budget.


Team Leadership & Staffing:

  • Hire, train, and manage engineering and maintenance staff.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and skill development to meet operational needs.
  • Direct maintenance staff and assign responsibilities as needed.


Guest Services Support:

  • Respond and/or delegate promptly to guest maintenance requests, ensuring professional and timely service.


Budget Management:

  • Manage the engineering department's operating budget, including forecasting expenses, monitoring expenditures, and identifying cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality.


Vendor Relations:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with external contractors and suppliers for operational engineering needs.


Campus Exterior & Landscaping:

  • Maintain parking areas, landscaping, plantings, and seasonal décor across the Red Lion Inn campus.


HVAC & Energy Management:

  • Oversee heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for guest comfort and energy efficiency.
  • Implement energy-saving initiatives, including LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances.


Fire & Safety Compliance:

  • Ensure all fire detection and suppression systems are fully operational.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and fire drills in compliance with regulations.


Emergency Preparedness:

  • Develop, implement, and manage emergency programs, including training staff on emergency procedures and conducting regular drills.


Security System Oversight:

  • Maintain and monitor security systems, including CCTV, access controls, and alarms.


Emergency & Crisis Response:

  • Respond swiftly to maintenance emergencies, such as power outages, leaks, and mechanical failures.


Regulatory & Code Compliance:

  • Stay updated on building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Ensure the property meets all legal and operational requirements


Educational Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; a degree in Engineering, Building and Construction, Mechanics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Technical certifications or vocational training in relevant fields are advantageous.


Experience:

  • A minimum of 2-4 years of experience in engineering and maintenance roles, preferably within the hospitality or customer service industry.
  • Prior supervisory or managerial experience is required.


Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in fire safety, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and equipment specifications.
  • Familiarity with building codes, safety regulations, and energy-efficient practices.
  • Experience in preventative maintenance procedures and troubleshooting techniques.

Management and Leadership Skills:

  • Strong leadership abilities to manage and motivate a maintenance team effectively.
  • Excellent organizational skills to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in budget management, including forecasting expenses and controlling costs.

Communication Skills:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with team members, other departments, guests, and external vendors.
  • Ability to provide clear instructions and training to staff.


Problem-Solving Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills to diagnose issues and implement effective solutions promptly.
  • Ability to remain calm and make decisions under pressure, especially during emergencies.


Certifications:

  • Relevant trade licenses or certifications (e.g., HVAC certification, electrical license) a plus.


Physical Demands:

  • Flexible Schedule - ability to work long hours, weekends, holidays.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, often the entire shift.
  • Ability to move quickly about the property to the various departments.
  • Must work well in highly stressful situations to effectively lead and provide guidance to guests and employees.
  • Must be able to lift, bend, and carry up to 50 lbs.
