Lead Radiology Technologist
A Brief Overview
Assists in coordinating, implementing and monitoring shift activities required in the radiographic examination and treatment of patient. Assigns duties / activities and the effective utilization of radiology staff and other resources. Performs routine and special radiology procedures as required.
What you will do
- Assists in coordinating daily department activities in accordance with established policies and procedures to facilitate efficient radiology operations and ensure that patient care objectives are maintained. Assists in the formulation and implementation of department procedures and policies
- Reviews work orders to prioritize activities and promote efficient operation of area; expedites examination / treatment of patients as needed.
- Schedules and assigns work to employees to ensure adequate service is provided and required duties are completed. Coordinates and makes daily patient / work assignments to ensure that daily workload is carried out through individual or cooperative activities.
- Oversees the work of personnel and instructs them in providing technical services such as the setup, regulation and monitoring of radiology / x-ray machine and other equipment.
- Reviews patient charts and department records to ensure that procedures are performed in accordance with professional standards and practices.
- Provides assistance with examination / procedures as required.
- Collaborates with radiology manager to facilitate assignment of new employees for in-service instruction and orientation.
- Assists in the orientation and oversees the supervision of students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of their training.
- Confers and works collaboratively with patient / family / hospital staff in a customer responsive and courteous manner, in compliance with iRESPECT standards and promoting patient / customer satisfaction to achieve positive patient outcomes.
- Answers inquiries; communicates and interprets policies, procedures and standards of practices to staff / patient / family / visitors to promote understanding and ensure consistency in the application of policies and procedures.
- Interprets radiology goals, policies and procedures.
- Investigates and answers queries from physicians, nursing staff and patients / families regarding procedure.
- Resolves complaints, conflicts and operational problems. Informs Radiology Manager / Nursing Clinical Supervisor of any problems or issues which cannot be resolved or require intervention.
- Notifies the Nursing Clinical Supervisor as needed to ensure the timely resolution of problems / issues requiring immediate attention during “off” shifts (i.e. nights, evening, weekend).
- Interpreting radiology, personnel and other applicable administrative polices, takes personnel / disciplinary action as needed at the time of infraction and in consultation with the Clinical Supervisor or Radiology Manager. Follows up with Radiology Manager regarding employee performance, any employee action taken and / or to recommend disciplinary action.
- Performs routine and special radiology procedures as ordered by physician, consistent with patient care policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices, patient safety practices and departmental activities.
- Practices proper aseptic techniques and universal precautions according to approved procedures.
- Selects and prepares equipment and supplies needed for each procedure. Exercises judgment in selecting proper equipment settings.
- Elicits the cooperation of patients by explaining procedure. Positions and instructs patients regarding x-ray procedures. Evaluates the patient’s condition and applies immobilizing devices when the patient cannot or will not cooperate. Uses supportive devices such as sandbags, angle boards and binders to obtain precise position, to avoid re-injury, discomfort and pain, or intruding the sterile field.
- Performs diagnostic procedures as qualified by education, skill, competency and experience. Assists physician and radiology staff during procedure.
- Performs radiology examinations and special procedures to produce desired radiographic images based on assigned area (Diagnostic Radiology, Ultrasound, CT and MRI).
- Uses portable / mobile radiographic units; pushes or operates mechanically driven portable units and performs radiographic procedures specialty areas such as Trauma ICU, obstetrics units and in surgery under sterile conditions when requested.
- Prepares and assists in administering contrast agents by monitoring dosages and determining any potential allergies ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures.
- Observes patient and equipment during procedure.
- Reports adverse or any unusual reactions or events.
- Processes films and prepares images for viewing following established procedures.
- Recognizes and corrects technical errors to ensure a clear and accurate scan / image.
- Practices radiation safety through appropriate use of radiation protection devices and adhering to radiation safety standards to protect patient and staff and to comply with regulatory agencies and requirements.
- Ensures accurate documentation in performing and processing all procedures in order to capture all charges and other relevant information.
- Operates the Radiology Information System to enter required test data and patient information, using all appropriate modules with accuracy. Ensures patient information and images are correctly transmitted to PACS system.
- Documents care based on standards of care and practice and / or clinical priorities for documentation (assessment, radiology procedure, and patient's response during procedure).
- Responds and / or participates with medical emergencies. Initiates and / or assists with CPR / BLS / ACLS as required.
- Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes. Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data.
- Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient / family, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
- Participates in quality / performance improvement. Collects quality data for monitoring performance improvement and to produce the best value service.
- Provides support to radiology and other medical and hospital staff to provide clinical assistance as needed. Assists in orientation and supervision of new staff members and student when they provide patient care, treatment and services as part of their training.
- Assists with maintenance and care of department equipment and utilizes supplies in a cost effective manner. Maintains stock level of supplies and materials.
- Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel. Prepares or cleans patient rooms by changing linens, stocking supplies and wiping off tables and equipment. Adheres to established policies, compliance / quality improvement, and safety, environment and infection control standards.
- Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Responds to problems / opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities which includes committees, monitoring and follow-up.
- Assists in development and maintenance of department’s budget.
- Provides coverage for relief and absences. Demonstrates flexibility to work night, weekend, holiday shifts and on-call to provide continuous Radiology coverage as required.
- This position will cross train in CT. This position will fill in over in CT as needed
