Director of Core Facilities

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Five (5) years of full-time progressive experience in a research environment, including relevant lab management and project and business management experience or five (5) years of full-time facilities management experience within a large/complex research environment, higher education/academic institution and/or health related environment may be considered. Supervisory experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in science or engineering or MBA (foreign equivalent or higher) with scientific or technical background may be considered. Operational and managerial experience within a shared/core research facility in academia or industry. Familiarity with federal cost studies and core facility accounting practices. Experience managing finances and obtaining/facilitating external funding. Experience with the development and delivery of educational courses/materials. Experience in relevant professional organizations (e.g., ABRF). Familiarity with campus and state policies and procedures related to environmental health and safety and facilities/building management. Experience conducting inspections and developing and implementing policies and procedures to safeguard equipment and experiments in progress.


Brief Description of Duties:
Serve as the institutional expert on research core facility development, management and operations and provide strategic guidance to university leadership on building and sustaining a robust core facility infrastructure that will advance the mission and reputation of the university. Represent SBU at national conferences and stay abreast of financial and technical trends that impact core facilities.

  • Develop, facilitate, and lead the SBU Core Facility Network, including coordination and engagement with the Core Facility Advisory Committee and individual core facilities across all campuses. In collaboration with core facility leadership, review core facility capabilities and operations and develop and implement a cohesive strategic plan for the Core Facility Network. Facilitate Core Facility Network collaboration and networking opportunities and advocate for the value of core facilities to the university.
  • Establish and maintain institutional business guidelines and practices for the formation, approval, continuation and evaluation of core facilities. Collaboratively oversee the development and implementation of best practices for operations, reporting, communications, performance metrics, and financial outcomes. Coordinate an annual review of core facility performance, outcomes, and user feedback.
  • In collaboration and consultation with research and finance leadership, establish and support the compliance oversight infrastructure that is needed to facilitate institutional compliance with federal regulations. Act as a liaison between core facilities and compliance unit(s) and support cost analyses, budget and rate development, and fiscal regulatory compliance.
  • Engage with core facility leadership and provide advice and guidance on establishing strategic priorities, effective business models, securing extramural funding and best practices for core facility operations. Assist core leadership with identifying gaps/needs and advise on equipment acquisition, replacement and removal. Facilitate the development and delivery of business training and educational/professional development opportunities for core facility personnel, including interactions with external professional organizations (e.g., Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities)
  • Develop and oversee a centralized, shared administrative and financial support operation, including acquisition and implementation of tools, technologies/software, and other shared resources (e.g., lab management software, core facility website, equipment database, reporting tools). Oversee and steward a core facility support/operational budget and supervise and mentor staff members.
  • Serve as the central point of contact for the strategic support of core facilities and related research initiatives. Coordinate with leadership on faculty recruitment involving shared services and instrumentation. Develop and oversee strategies for the development and support of externally funded infrastructure and instrumentation grant applications/opportunities (e.g., S10, C06, MRI), including facilitation of limited submission procedures. Engage with the SBU Advancement Office for fundraising from philanthropic, alumni, and donor sources to financially support SBU Core Facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
