Postdoctoral Associate
Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached CV/resume)
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Mechanobiology, or a closely related field in hand by May 2025. First-author research publications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong technical background in engineering, biology, biophysics, and fabrication, with applications in biomedical problems. At least 4 publications in peer-reviewed research journals.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator Dr. Michael Mak the department of Pharmacological Sciences. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University.
The Mak Research Lab focuses on studying multiscale mechanobiology from the cytoskeleton to single cells to tissue systems, with emphasis on physiological and pathological processes including solid tumor progression, fibrosis, and organoid morphogenesis. We develop and apply advanced experimental methods, novel biofabrication and bioprinting methods, novel biological scaffolds, computational tools, image analysis, and devices to investigate cell and tissue biophysical phenotypes.
We are looking for someone highly motivated and excited about engineering complex biological systems for disease modeling and regenerative medicine applications and to uncover fundamental mechanisms underlying biophysical phenotypes in cells and tissues.
We are open to engineering, biophysics, and/or interdisciplinary backgrounds with experiences in one or more of the following: mechanobiology, cell mechanics, tissue engineering, biological scaffolds, computational modeling, image analysis, informatics and data analytics, biophysics, organoids, tumor microenvironment, fibrosis, liver disease, bioprinting, device engineering.
Duties:
- Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research experiments in the field of mechanobiology, organoid engineering, and biofabrication.
- Collect and analyze data, including literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related fields to analyze the collected data.
- Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.
- Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed.
- Other duties as assigned, which may include attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
