COORDINATOR OF NURSING SERVICES - JOB DESCRIPTION
RESPONSIBLE TO: AED of IDD Operations or designee
FUNCTION: Under the oversight of the AED/IDD Services, ensures the provision of nursing services within the Agency; ensures the coordination of healthcare between the individual and the providers of healthcare. Provides administrative and clinical supervision to the Nurse Managers and other designated nurses within the Agency. Ensures the continuous maintenance of appropriate nursing services and adequate staffing. Ensures the ongoing education of nursing staff consistent with changes in healthcare and clinical practices. Responsible for reviewing and analyzing information in an effort to identify any potential trends and submits recommendations/plans of action in response to identified trends and issues.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with others both within and outside of the organization. Ability to teach adult students in group and individual settings, through new employee orientation training and ongoing support training. Supervisory and management skills and ability to provide support to staff in multiple and diverse locations throughout Chautauqua County. The ability to interpret, implement, and synthesize regulations into department policies and procedures and curricula for training other professionals and direct care staff. Strong “people skills,” including but not limited to: the ability to communicate and work with a diverse workforce; good listening skills; and productive conflict resolution skills. Computer skills sufficient to carry out assigned duties. Self-direction and the ability to organize time well and manage multiple responsibilities effectively and in a timely fashion. Must possess reliability, adaptability, and flexibility. Must be willing to work a schedule that includes day, evening and/or weekend hours to provide opportunities for training, as needed or assigned. Willingness and ability to travel for work as needed or assigned is essential. Physical condition or reasonable accommodation(s) commensurate with the demands of the job.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Registered Nurse with current license to practice nursing in New York State plus five (5) years experience as an RN, a minimum of two (2) years of which was in a management/supervisory/administrative capacity. Experience working in a program serving individuals with disabilities strongly preferred. A valid driver’s license is required and an acceptable driving record, as established by the agency’s insurance carrier.
SPECIFIC DUTIES: CLINICAL: 1. Provides clinical supervision to Residential and Day Services nursing staff employed by the Agency, responsible for educating each on best practices and compliance with applicable regulations. 2. Monitors programming within the homes/service areas to evaluate the success of the programming and researches new systems for teaching and enabling individuals to achieve maximum potential for growth. 3. Serves as an Agency resource on clinical nursing issues. 4. Communicates nursing information, issues and changes between department administration and nursing staff. 5. Assists the Nursing Staff with unresolved medical issues. 6. In conjunction with the Dietitian, works to ensure the dietary concerns and issues are addressed within the homes, including researching alternative diets/menus for the homes.
QUALITY ASSURANCE: 1. Conducts monitoring visits on a regular basis to ensure adherence to policies, procedures and regulations. 2. Ensures that all internal and external QA/QI audits, in regards to nursing services, that are completed are responded to and corrections verified in the time lines established. 3. Identifies systemic issues that may arise in the provision of clinical services through the analysis of certification reviews, SIRC recommendations and staff communications and ensures that curricula are developed and implemented to address area(s) of concern. 4. Develops and implements a competency verification process to ensure that all staff receiving health-related training are implementing best practices. 5. Develops methods to provide oversight within residential and day program service areas, to ensure health care services are provided in accordance with training and within regulatory standards. 6. Identifies nursing/medical training needs and Agency risks as determined by external and internal reviews, incidents, infection reports and medication error reports.
ADMINISTRATIVE: 1. Represents The Resource Center at various meeting and committee functions within or outside of the organization as needed or assigned, including but not limited to: serving as liaison for Electronic Health Records (EHR),and with Mental Hygiene Legal Services (MHLS), and WCA Hospital in order to coordinate accountable medical care. 2. Facilitates communication and collaboration between the Primary Care Clinic and adjunct providers to ensure identified health needs are adequately treated. 3. Serves as primary resource to Agency-wide nursing/medical training committees, workgroups and teams, including but not limited to: Safety/OSHA, CPR/First Aid training, Nurse Leadership, Infection Control Committee and Special Incident Review. 4. Coordinates efforts to establish mentoring and internship opportunities for nurses new to the field/Agency. 5. Conducts Nurse Manager meetings on no less than a monthly basis, and ensures follow-up on any issue(s). 6. Participates in the development of Outcomes and Performance Targets relative to assigned area(s) of responsibility and oversees the implementation and tracking of relevant Performance Targets.
OPERATIONAL: 1. Ensures policies are revised and/or developed as regulations change and/or systems change. 2. Manages and monitors all phases of the clinical nursing operation of designated programs. Is responsible for ensuring the administrative direction of these assigned programs at all times. 3. Conducts Nursing Training monthly for new staff and remedial training for other staff on a monthly basis regarding Health Care Protocols, Nursing Practices and other Health Issues. 4. Upon request, conducts training at staff meetings on specific topics related to individuals in that home/program.

Hiring, firing, discipline, performance evaluation, in-service education and training, and ensuring that there are an adequate number of staff to fulfill assigned responsibilities. b. Coordinates staff orientation with the Training Department and ensures new hires and regular staff receive ongoing trainings. May develop new trainings based upon department need. d. Oversees all aspects of the workforce including timely completion of new hire paperwork, disciplinary actions and other personnel related matters. 2. Ability and willingness to assume on-call responsibilities as needed or assigned.
