The Medication Assistant is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure delivery of medications and health related items to the residents within the community. The Medication Assistant assists in developing, coordinating, and performing the tasks on the service plan according to the resident's preferences and abilities. *Applicants must have medication administration certification.

Essential Functions:

Under the supervision of a nurse, administer and accurately record the administration of medications as prescribed by a resident’s physician(s) in accordance with company’s policies and all applicable state and federal guidelines.

Receives and reviews report from the previous shift and RCC, LPN or Medication Technician.

Reads the Communication Log and Shower Schedule for information and changes at the beginning of each day. Documents in the Communication Log and Progress notes, as appropriate throughout the day.

Maintains clean, neat, comfortable, safe environment for residents, staff, and visitors including housekeeping duties as assigned. Assures door is alarmed at all times, if needed.

Reports deficiencies observed in resident apartments clothing/linen and community to administrator. Completes Incident Report form as needed for any unusual occurrence.

Obtain, record, and report a resident’s vital signs as required during the administration of medications.

Manage the supply of medications available for administration to residents, by ordering medications as needed, receiving medication deliveries, and reconciling any differences.

Provide an accounting for all medications ordered, received, stored, and administered in accordance with company’s policies and all applicable state and federal guidelines. Verify quantities of controlled substances at each shift change. Notify Director of Resident Services of any discrepancies or issues related to medications.

Store medications in a secure manner in accordance with company’s policies and all applicable state and federal guidelines.

Assist residents with the activities of daily living (“ADL”), including, but not limited to, dressing and undressing, bathing, personal hygiene, mobility devices, and care of ADL devices (hearing aids, eyeglasses, and the like).

Provide assistance with housekeeping tasks, use of the telephone, laundry, escort, transportation, and mail delivery.

Observe and report changes in residents’ physical condition and cognitive/emotional status.

Conduct resident checks and resident rounds and monitor for environmental hazards. Record any incidents, errors, accidents, and hazards. Notify the supervising director on duty of any of these types of events.

Assist in tasks related to dining, including, but not limited to, escorting residents to the dining room, setting up and cleaning tables, serving meals, and busing tables.

Order and monitor use of resident care supplies. Routinely inspect, clean, and monitor equipment and supplies to ensure resident safety. Report any equipment or supply issues to the Director of Resident Services for correction or repair.

Avoids loss, breakage, and waste of supplies and equipment. Maintains a neat and orderly Medication Room.

Assists residents moving in or out as directed.

Maintains current resident record for each resident including but not limited to, obtaining current physician orders, clarifying orders, and alert and monthly charting.

Maintains, transcribes and documents in the Medication Assistance Record according to Policy and Procedure.

Maintains service plans. May participate in Service Plan reviews, as directed.

Performs resident care with an awareness of dignity and individuality, with understanding and concern.

Abides by established policies and procedures of community. Looks for ways to improve community functioning.

Keeps work areas neat and clean; helps maintain appearance of community.

Participate in staff meetings, in-service education programs, projects, and committees as assigned.

Performs other duties as assigned by the director or Executive Director.

Employment Requirements:

Adheres to and conveys the philosophy of Assisted Living and Residential Care. Has awareness and practices in accordance with the regulations of the state.

Demonstrates knowledge of infection control and universal precautions.

Documents care given adhering to community policies and procedures.

Is thoroughly familiar with fire, missing persons and other emergency procedures, follows community policy and procedures detailed in fire and disaster plans.

Requires minimal supervision. Is a self-starter.

Maintains acceptable attendance record; notifies supervisor if late or unable to work in accordance with personnel policies; follows work schedule.

Organizes and utilizes time appropriately; sets priorities and accomplishes assigned tasks.

Displays mature behavior and attitude in speech and action; demonstrates consistently pleasant demeanor, tone of voice, supports the philosophy and approach to care used by the community.

Keeps resident information confidential; respects resident’s rights; respects privacy and right to self-determination of residents.

Performs challenging or unpleasant tasks with grace; works cooperatively with supervisors and displays willingness to assist co-workers.

Organizes and utilizes time appropriately; sets priorities to accomplish assigned tasks.

Has ability to spend long periods of feet and to ambulate quickly.

Is accurate, dependable, neat and thorough in assigned tasks.

Ability and willingness to learn quickly.

Ability to read, speak, write, comprehend, and effectively communicate in English.

Required Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Previous experience preferred with medications, but not necessary.

Prior experience in a similar position with a long-term or related community preferred.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

This position requires auditory ability, frequent sitting, standing, walking (including walking up/down stairs), bending kneeling, and reaching, twisting, lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs., and pushing/pulling up to 200 lbs.

Work Environment:

This position also requires using hand for grasping, and typing/tapping on EMR electronic device. Exposure to blood/bodily fluids likely.
