Engineering Inspector I - Development Program

Duties
This is an opportunity for individuals interested in a career in road safety and construction to be a participant in RCOC’s Development Program as an Engineering Inspector I. While in the program, participants will complete classroom and on the job training in preparation for the construction season. The Engineer Inspector I is assigned specific road construction projects in various departments throughout the construction season, where they will perform a broad range of road construction inspection activities to assure quality of work. Detailed record keeping, subject to audit is required, in addition to all normal inspection requirements. Elements of the development program in addition to classroom include: job shadowing and rotations within the Construction, Permits, Traffic Safety, and Highway Maintenances departments.
Special Experience/Education
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- The ability to demonstrate basic math skills and be proficient with operating a computer.
- A demonstrated willingness and desire to learn new skills.
- Regular and predictable onsite job attendance, including availability to work during hours of operation, is an essential function of this position.
- Must have the energy, stamina and availability to work the necessary overtime as required, which often includes weekends and / or dawn-to-dusk inspection days.
- The ability to demonstrate strong communication skills (verbal and written).
- The ability to work within a team environment.
- Willingness to accept feedback and direction as required to build one’s knowledge of inspection standards.
- Requires a daily schedule that supports RCOC hours of operation.
- Must perform duties in a professional and courteous manner to promote a positive image of the Road Commission for Oakland County.
- Minimum commitment of 12- 18 months in position.
- Must possess and maintain a valid MI state driver’s license.
