Physical Therapy Assistant

DEFINITION: Under the professional direction of a physical therapist, assists in the provision of physical therapy services according to documented treatment plans; performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This class is distinguished from the PT by the latter's responsibility for conducting patient evaluations and for the development of treatment plans and goals. It is further distinguished from the Therapy Attendant by its requirement for licensure or certification and its ability to work without close supervision.

Examples of Duties:

1. Reviews treatment plan and goals with the therapist using appropriate techniques and equipment under the general supervision of a therapist.

2. Assists therapists in consultation services to patients, parents, and educational providers by providing home and classroom instruction on services and the use and care of durable medical equipment; makes recommendations to therapists regarding patients' needs and helps construct needed adaptive equipment and splints.

3. Observes and documents results of treatment; notifies supervising physical or occupational therapist of any change in patient's condition that is not consistent with planned progress or goals.

4. Provides patient information to the clinical team; assists therapists in coordinating clinics, following up on recommendations made by the clinic team, and coordinating therapy services with the patient's educational team.

5. Orients patients, community agencies, new staff.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

1. Possession of a valid license as a Physical Therapy Assistant issued by the State of Florida Physical Therapy Board; or,
2. graduation from a Physical Therapy Assistant educational program approved by the American Physical Therapy Association, and verification that you are a Physical Therapy Assistant license applicant from the State of Florida

Note: Candidates may be hired before receiving their PTA license. However, as a condition of continued employment, incumbents must obtain the appropriate certificate or license as required by the State of Florida.

Knowledge of: human anatomy and physiology; human growth and development; pathophysiology resulting from injury and disease; concepts, scope, and techniques of physical/occupational therapy; medical/legal aspects of physical or occupational therapy services; self-care and daily living skills needed by patients for maximum independent living; basic construction, use, and care of orthopedic appliances.

Ability to: communicate effectively both orally and in written format; adhere to professional ethics and standards of conduct; select appropriate treatment techniques within defined guidelines; interpret occupational/physical therapy assessment results; establish effective relationships with patients and their families; work cooperatively as part of a multidisciplinary team; act effectively in a medical emergency; maintain confidentiality.

Language Skills:

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.

  • Home Health: 1 year (Required)

License/Certification:

  • CPR Certification (Preferred)
  • Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant (Required)
