Plant Operations offers comprehensive services at The Rockefeller University,including a full range of building trades services which are responsible for routine maintenance and minor/major space alterations,plumbing,electrical,carpentry,HVAC,grounds maintenance,locksmith,custodial,moving,and setup services.

Overview

Under the direction of Engineering Management and Lead Mechanic, the Maintenance Mechanics will operate and maintain the physical plant and university buildings to ensure a safe and efficient environment and to continually work towards and support the improvement of engineering services. Supervision of shifts will be under the direction of the Watch Engineer. This position requires technical and general preventative maintenance experience and repair for a wide range of equipment and utility systems, including but not limited to boilers and auxiliaries, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, air handlers, domestic water, chilled water, hot water, steam, building exhaust, compressed air, controls, lighting, fire systems, etc. Experience with boiler systems, absorption/centrifugal chillers/process chillers preferred, utility plant systems, and operations background desired.

Responsibilities

The Mechanic's Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:

  • Technical, general preventative maintenance, and repair for a wide range of equipment and utility systems, including but not limited to boilers and auxiliaries, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, air handlers, domestic water, chilled water, hot water, steam, building exhaust, compressed air, controls, lighting, fire systems, etc.
  • Experience with boiler systems, absorption/centrifugal chillers/process chillers preferred, with utility plant systems and operations background desired
  • Be familiar with lubrication and other corrective and preventative maintenance needed repairs
  • Complete all work and assignments in a safe and professional manner
  • Be available for any emergencies and act in an engineering capacity to protect, preserve the physical plant, University buildings, and their systems during an emergency
  • Keep accurate records of temperatures, loads, steam pressure, steam flow, and water analysis (experience with water treatment a plus)
  • Read and interpret readings from meters, gauges, and other measuring units
  • Maintain constant attention to the overall operation of the physical plant and University buildings
  • Assist other maintenance and engineering personnel when necessary in the completion of projects and repairs
  • Respond to emergency calls for systems and equipment failure
  • Perform additional duties requested by the Chief/Assistant Chief Engineer and Watch Engineer to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the physical plant and University buildings

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent required. Trade School graduates, or candidates possessing an N.Y.C. refrigeration license would be highly preferred. Candidate must have three or more years of working experience in power plant operations and preventative maintenance (boilers, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC equipment). Three years of experience will be credited for a N.Y.C. Refrigeration license. Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate with individuals at all levels, both inside and outside the department effectively. Carry out specific oral and written instructions. Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments. Be able to work under stressful circumstances at times, be a clear thinker in stressful situations, and exercise good judgment. Must be able to work in confined spaces and also at elevated temperatures. Meet established attendance standards. Must be able to lift, push, and pull a minimum of 50 pounds on a regular basis. Reasonable assistance may be required when lifting, pushing, and/or pulling are undertaken that exceeds these minimum requirements. Ability to work on ladders and scaffolds, sit, stand, and walk for momentary to extended periods of time. Ability to work safely with hazardous materials. May be required to work weekdays and/or weekends, evening and or night shifts if needed to meet seasonal requirements and/or deadlines. May be required to work on religious and/or legal holidays on scheduled days/shifts. Will be required to work as necessary during disaster situations, before, during, or after a disaster. May be required to stay after workday to assist after a disaster situation until relief arrives. Schedule rotation may be required. Must maintain current licenses and/or certificates, if applicable.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
