Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Language Revitalization Program Manager, assist the classroom teacher in setting up and maintaining an inviting learning environment. Teach with a high level of Anishinaabe language fluency and a clear understanding of immersion philosophy. The class will function as a regular toddler program but will only use Anishinaabemowin in the process. All ALRD staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.
The original spoken language of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian community is in a critical state of loss. If action is not taken immediately the language that was spoken for hundreds of years will be lost forever.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Utilize Anishinaabemowin (speaking our language) to provide assistance to students in their daily classroom activities; monitor the classroom during work-time.
- Assist with recesses, monitor and share meal time breaks with students utilizing Anishinaabemowin.
- Monitor students while arriving and departing school buildings speaking Anishinaabe.
- Assist in maintaining classroom documents, records and attendance.
- Maintain a safe learning environment for all children.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, well-organized classroom environment.
- Assist students in personal care.
- Assist in supervising fieldtrips, after school programs, and other school related activities and creating learning materials when necessary with a focus on language acquisition.
- Participate in in-service training.
- Assist with maintaining standards of student behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
- Assist in analyzing and appraising childrens development and progress.
- Guide children in exploring their interests, building self-confidence and self-esteem.
- Assist children in eating, resting, exercising and toileting.
- Ensure the cleanliness and safety of materials, classroom and playgrounds by performing routine inspections.
- Maintain effective working relationships with parents by providing opportunities for parent participation.
- Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
- Contact is with students, department employees and supervisor.
- Contact with other school staff members, Language Revitalization Program Manager, officials, parents, students and general public with the purpose to obtain, clarify or give facts concerning students, language acquisition or school activities as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must have basic Anishinaabe language skills.
- Excellent communication and group leadership skills.
- Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
Desired Qualifications:
- Associates Degree.
- Fluent Anishinaabe Speaker.
- Two years teaching Anishinaabemowin.
- Early childhood teaching experience.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
- Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Knowledge of the history, culture, and cultural needs of Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
- Knowledge of early childhood development, diet and nutrition guidelines.
- Knowledge of curriculum development and preparation procedures.
- Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including Windows Office programs.
- Skill in administering disciplinary rules to children and resolving situational conflicts among children.
- Skill in interacting and engaging children.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

Physical Demands:
