Executive Director of Development / Golden State Division

The Salvation Army (TSA) is one of the largest and oldest poverty fighting organizations in the world. It has been a leader in services in San Francisco for over 140 years. In 2023, the most recent complete fuscal year, the Golden State Division of TSA, headquartered in San Francisco :

  • Served over 700,000 people in 19 California counties through its services at 60 community and social service centers; 25 housing and treatment programs; and 1 camp and conference center
  • Partnered with over 45,000 volunteers, and employed 435 staff
  • Piloted The Way Out, the highest impact and most cost efficient solution to the homeless
  • crisis in San Francisco that and is backed by prominent philanthropic, political, civic, and

Overview of the Position :

  • The Executive Director of Development must be a strong leader of development staff, and have exceptional management and communication skills that inspire, motivate and hold staff accountable for meeting / exceeding the overall fundraising goals for the department and the division. The new leader will have the opportunity to build a leadership team within the department that will focus on the day to day management of staff involved in annual campaigns, and public / private giving to key programs along with building staff leadership for executing a large capital campaign to support the The Way Out, which is a new homeless initiative designed to restore lives and inspire change through a recovery system of care.
  • As an essential member of the senior leadership team reporting directly to the Divisional Commander, the Executive Director of Development will provide an important throughline for leadership given the periodic rotation of Officers (senior leaders) along with playing a unique role in fostering continuity and longevity of the Advisory Board, development staff and cooperation and coordination with other key players and peers with a focus on San Francisco.
  • This role will partner closely with the Divisional Commander in designing and implementing strategies to develop actively engaged fundraising volunteer Advisory Boards throughout the Division, while serving as the lead staff to the Advisory Board Development Committee for San Francisco. The Executive Director of Development will work cooperatively with the Territorial Executive Director of Development (TEDD) and territorial Community Relations and Development Department (CRD) staff to adhere to and implement territorial CRD programs and practices and policies (e.g. major gifts, planned giving, and donor data management).
  • DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Leads the overall management of the entire development operation which currently includes the 21-person divisional development department responsible for fund raising for operating funds along with major and capital gifts; planned giving, fundraising events, direct marketing, digital fund raising, corporate giving and foundation grants.
  • Oversees additional functions within the department which include : public relations, marketing, social media, advertising and Advisory Board engagement.
  • Directly staffs a portfolio of assigned leadership with major and principal donors and prospects to effectively steward, educate, cultivate, and solicit gifts from these donors each fiscal year.
  • Ensures successful planning and execution of capital and endowment campaigns, working with consultants and leadership volunteers as needed along with internal leadership, development staff, and other key stakeholders.
  • Establishes and manages an annual development plan with activity and giving goals, calendars, budgets, and other essential management activities in sync with divisional leadership, submitting regular reports as requested and monitoring progress with staff.
  • Creates and leads an effective department team atmosphere that encourages cooperation, strategic thinking, regular communication, professional growth, and creativity while instilling healthy accountability around advancing the mission and successfully meeting goals.
  • Communicates and collaborates with leadership, board, and volunteers to help personally cultivate their networks for large gifts and grants. Keeps all others apprised of all significant interactions with leadership donors and prospects and brings leaders into relationships at key moments.
  • Consults with leadership to understand organizational priorities and to develop strategies that benefit the Army and align with donor interests.
  • Oversees the planning and implementation of a strong direct / integrated marketing plan throughout the year and throughout the division as a solid foundation for all fundraising efforts and constituent communications.
  • Contributes as a participant on the divisional leadership team under the direction of the Divisional Commander (or designate), attending the Command Finance Council (CFC) on a monthly basis to present monthly development reports and collaborating with leadership to advance the mission of the Salvation Army.
  • Collaborates with officers, corps, and social services program leadership throughout the division to support the achievement of their resource development and marketing goals, coming alongside to support planning, to coach, and to help implement as is feasible.
  • Drives the success and career growth of team members as an effective manager and leader, holding regular staff meetings, supporting staff with resources and training and guidance, evaluating staff on an annual basis, and recommending separation, position and compensation changes as needed, while adhering to all HR policies.
  • Works in close collaboration with officers, program, finance, and development staff to develop cases for support for a portfolio of giving opportunities, documenting funding needs in a compelling and detailed manner.
  • Works cooperatively with the TEDD and other territorial CRD professional staff to develop and implement the territorial major gifts program and management structure, program standards, and business practices and policies, and does the same with other territorial initiatives and programs (e.g. planned giving, donor data management, PR protocols, etc.).
  • Ensures strong office management and donor data system infrastructure, including continually updated CRM donor files, reporting systems, batching of income / donor information, attentive correspondence, and timely gift acknowledgments, etc., in keeping with department policies and procedures. Ensures adherence to all divisional and territorial business practices and policies.
  • Supports a strong annual Christmas kettle campaign across the division through corps training, communication of corporate agreements and stipulations, support for volunteer recruitment and training, gathering of reporting information, approaches to locally headquartered retail chains, media kick-off events that achieve high quantity media impressions, etc.
  • Participates in professional training and territorial / national meetings and conferences as budget allows.

  • SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

  • Effective interpersonal, conversational, and presentation skills, demonstrating professional maturity, emotional intelligence, situational awareness, excellent writing abilities, and strong case development and gift solicitation skills.
  • A leader who enjoys problem-solving, thinks strategically and creatively is goal- oriented, and takes initiative with good follow-through.
  • An strong manager who demonstrates a strategic mindset, balancing attention to analysis, details, and metrics with higher-level goal-setting and planning, without micro- managing.
  • A fundraiser who is comfortable with direct leadership donor and volunteer interactions, who models good stewardship communication practices, and who is able to effectively ask, lead the gift conversation, network for connections, facilitate a team approach, and rally others who can open doors
  • A team leader, able to check ego at the door, with an ability to effectively motivate staff, officer leaders, and key volunteers to collaborate for the successful achievement of department and organizational goals
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout the Division.
  • Ability to work extended hours during busy times, occasional weekends and some holiday hours particularly around The Salvation Army’s busy Christmas season.
  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, with a minimum of eight years of progressive fundraising professional experience, including demonstrated leadership and a strong track record of success.
  • Direct experience raising major gifts from high net worth individuals.
  • Significant experience with capital campaign fundraising models.
  • Proven expertise in developing and maintaining positive relationships with diverse individuals, including executives, leadership volunteers, wealthy donors, internal colleagues and stakeholders, and Salvation Army leadership.
  • CA driver’s license.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT :

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs
  • COMPENSATION :

    A competitive compensation package with a salary range of $200-250k and significant benefits will be provided to the successful candidate.
