SCOPE OF POSITION :
The job of the Sailing Camp Director is to see that all aspects of the Sailing Camp are running smoothly. The Sailing Camp Director supervises the sailing staff comprised of the sailing instructors and counseling staff.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Supervisory experience required
- Certified US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor or equivalent
- Powerboat driving experience required with valid Washington or Oregon State boater’s card
- Minimum two years sailing experience
- Excellent sailing skills with the ability to instruct sailing students
- Extensive technical knowledge of sailing
- Some prior teaching experience is preferred
- 2 years sailing and youth sailor coaching experience giving chalk-talks, on-the-water practices, etc.
- Technical experience with 420 sailboats or other single / double-handed dinghies
- Responsible, reliable, and enthusiastic with good judgment and class leadership skills
- First Aid and CPR
- Ability to follow oral and written directions
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Capable of maintaining positive working relationships with staff and campers
- Able to interact effectively with a diverse population
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Oversee the Summer Residential Sailing Camp program under the leadership and cooperation of the Camp DirectorParticipate in the planning and implementation of creative programming that meets the mission of Camp Gifford and The Salvation ArmyArrange and schedule programs with the key staff of the summer camping programSupervise sailing program and counseling staffCreate and maintain good staff morale and arrange scheduling to allow for appropriate personal time-and fellowship with other staff when allowed by camp scheduleCreate, implement and supervise sailing programEnsure an outstanding safe, organized, and educational experience to campers on land and waterInstruct youth sailors ranging from beginner to advanced (ages 10-17) on 420 sailboats or other single / double-handed dinghiesExhibit commitment to teamwork, strong working relationships, and supporting fellow instructorsAssist sailors in setting goals with a focus on progress, improvement, and a winning traditionEncourage participation and motivate sailors to a high level of commitment at practicesDevelop constructive daily lesson plans using scheduled program times, combining classroom and on-the-water lessons or activitiesSet goals and objectives for camp seasonSet practice calendar; confirm schedule with Camp Director and Corps OfficerMake appropriate decisions to ensure safety of students and boating staffConduct pre-practice chalk-talk with instruction and plan-of the-dayExplain and demonstrate proper sailing techniquesEnsure all evolutions are safely executedMake sound weather decisions by monitoring weather and water traffic conditionsDirect sailing instructors and safety boat officers during instructionDe-brief staff and secure all boats and equipment dailyPhysically assist sailors in launching, rigging and storing boatsFacilitate minor repairs and daily maintenance as neededPerform seamanship tasks; keep boats, equipment, and storage facility clean and organizedEvaluate and document progress / improvement of sailing students’ skillsMaintain open communication with students, parents, staff, and supervisorExhibit a sense of maturity and responsibility for the programAct as an appropriate role model encouraging the highest level of sportsmanlike behaviorConduct parent / sailor organizational meeting prior to summerResponsible for sail and power boat fleet readiness to get underwayInstruct safety boat swimmer on responsibilitiesInspect equipment after / after class and clean equipment after useUnderstand and enforce Camp Gifford and Washington State rules / regulations related to powered watercraft use as they pertain to staff and campersOperate Safety boat in accordance with US Sailing best practicesGive spiritual direction to the staff by leadership and example. Be an example of Christ to staff, campers, and volunteers through your verbal and non-verbal interactions, by your lifestyle and by your presenceMaintain a standard of cleanliness within the campOther duties as assignedGENERAL DUTIES :
Exhibit effective Christ-like conduct and service as an appropriate example for campers and staffGive support to the total camping program performing all other duties required to provide a consistently excellent programAttend and participate in all camp programs as required including, but not limited to evening programs, chapel activities, and staff meetingsFollow all policies and proceduresMaintain cleanliness and order in your person and living quartersAssist with cleanup of the total camp at the end of each session and at the conclusion of the summerPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basisGrasp, push, pull objects, and reach overheadOperate a telephone and computerLift up to 25 lbs.Understand verbal and written informationSweep, clean, and perform other janitorial tasks as neededQualified individuals must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
