Job Summary
The Program Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the curriculum planning, supervision, and teaching of children, adults and senior citizens in year-round programs and activities of the Red Shield Center to include Gym/Fitness Center, After School, Character Building, Summer Day Camp, Music Education, Women’s Ministries, Angel Tree, Red Kettle Campaign and/or any other corps sponsored program as needed. They will also oversee volunteer management.

In contacts related to this position’s duties, this individual acts as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission.
PERFORMANCE MEASURMENTS
This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, the timeliness and accuracy of accomplishing assigned goals will be reviewed and an evaluation of how effectively service is provided will also be reviewed.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Program Assistant
- Provides support to ensure a safe and stimulating active environment.
- Assists in the planning and preparation for daily activities.
- Assist instructors in preparing lesson outlines, plans, and curricula in assigned areas.
- Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids, including activity sheets, drawings and similar handouts.
- Leads athletic activities; and helps oversee gym, fitness center, track and game room use.
- Assists children or adults, individually or in groups, with fitness related questions or problems.
- Patrol locker rooms and other areas to ensure safety regulations are maintained.
- Provides oversight and guidance during open gym hours.
- Performs light cleaning and helps to maintain the neatness of assigned areas. Cleaning may consist of mopping, sweeping, wiping, and vacuuming.
- Provide assistance, as needed, with Special Events, Angel Tree and Red Kettle Campaign.
- Serve meals or snacks per program needs.
- Assist with multi-media or audio productions as needed.
- Help with Red Shield Teaching Opportunity Zone, including:
- Take attendance.
- Make copies and distribute music.
- Provide musical arts instruction as needed
- Will recruit and screen volunteers. Will utilize the volunteer website to assist with this.
- Maintain volunteer records.
- Assist volunteers with the online or paper application process when necessary.
- Will place volunteers and coordinate schedules.
- Complete required paperwork.
- Will be available to address or resolve issues.
- All other duties as assigned.
- May drive as needed.
This position reports to the Corps Officer.

- A 30, 60, and 90-day performance review will be conducted.
- A High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience working with youth or seniors helpful.
- CPR/AED/First Aid certified or able to pass certification course provided by Red Shield Center in cooperation with the American Red Cross.
- Valid Driver’s license/MVR clearance.
- Willing to promote the mission of The Salvation Army.
- Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
- Computer knowledge. Ability to work with database information helpful.
- Skill in preparing instructional aids and plans.
- A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/ priorities.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to provide activities for children and adults that encourage healthy growth.
- Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children of all ages and adults.
- Child supervision skills.
- Friendly and able to work with a diverse population.
- This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
- This individual will keep the Corps Officer informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
- This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.
- This position is required to do light to moderate physical work.
- In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office and gym equipment. Must be able to lift or move at least 50lbs occasionally.
- The work environment for this position includes an office/recreation environment with a low to medium noise level.
- This position may be required to work on Saturdays and/or Sundays as needed.
