Position Summary
The Salvation Army Northern Division Greater Duluth Area Corps is doing the most good by providing holistic, person-centered programming and services to individuals and families. Programs and services include adult and children's ministries and worship services, food, clothing, utility, and rent support, housing programs, short and long-term case management, seasonal youth basketball league, and community building.
The Salvation Army Northern Division Duluth Corps Rookie Basketball Association (RBA) Referee officiates the developmental youth basketball league games for youth in elementary and middle school. The Referee facilitates a safe, fair, and enjoyable game experience while creating learning opportunities and providing supportive correction to participants.
Temporary, 6 week program
March 19 - April 30
$18 - $21/hour, 3 hours per week
Essential Functions (approximate time spent)
- Officiate games; teach and motivate players to develop fundamental basketball skills, good sportsmanship, and positive relational skills. (70%)
- Maintain communication with RBA coaches, volunteers, and participant families regarding supervision, rules, safety, and sportsmanship. (10%)
- Assist with set up and clean up, including equipment storage, basic cleaning of the gym and other areas used, and ensuring areas are locked and secured when not in use. (10%)
- Coordinate with facility staff to ensure building policies and procedures are observed. (5%)
- Substitute for volunteer coaches as needed. (5%)
Education and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience refereeing, coaching, or playing basketball and working with youth.
- Must pass background checks.
Competencies
- Excellent knowledge of basketball rules and fundamentals.
- Flexible interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to teach and motivate players.
- High level of honor in dealing with confidential information.
- Works with integrity, valuing honesty and diligence.
- Proficient with PC.
Working Conditions
- Perform all physical aspects of the position, including being mobile, bending, reaching, typing, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time.
- Must be able to actively participate in games/activities.
- Environment includes gymnasiums; not eligible for a remote-friendly work environment.
- Must be able to communicate clearly in English and work in person.
