The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Groundskeeper for Camp Happyland, located in Richardsville, VA. Position Summary Performs routine grounds keeping work to ensure the beautification of the landscape. Performs preventive maintenance and upkeep of equipment. Operates maintenance vehicles, equipment and power tools as required. Essential Functions Daily mow the grass on the main camp and Port Rapids lawns and fields. Trim hedges and bushes. Water outside plants and flowers during periods of drought. Plant flowers, shrubs and trees. Ensure proper depth, water and mulch. Clean up the area when completed. Daily pick up trash on grounds and in the outside containers that are not performed by the program maintenance staff. Keep flower beds clear of weeds and spreads mulch as needed. Control weed growth through application of chemicals and use of the weed eater as instructed. Conduct preventive maintenance on all lawn care equipment to include cleaning, changing oil and spark plugs, filling the tank, and other maintenance as instructed by the manufacturer or caretaker. Operate the tractor when needed to perform ground keeping duties. Remove debris, brush, trees, limbs, etc. from the roadways, cart and pedestrian pathways, recreation areas, lodging areas and other common areas. Assist with minor maintenance projects around the camp. Minor maintenance projects may require the use of hand or power tools. Report any damaged or deficient equipment to the caretaker. Report any unsafe or hazardous conditions found on camp to the caretaker. If possible, correct the situation. Support weekend and summer camps by setting up facilities and performing outside beautification projects as directed by the camp caretaker or camp manager. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the camp caretaker or camp manager. Ability to learn through on-the-job training including ability to follow instructions. Ability to use and maintain equipment and tools effectively and in a safe manner. Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing and some climbing. Ability to operate lawn mower and other lawn care power and hand tools. Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or G.E.D. Or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. CertificationsValid State Driver’s License Physical Requirements/Working Conditions.Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects. Ability to read, write and communicate the English language. Ability to meet attendance requirements which may mean working some weekends. Work requires driving a vehicle, tractor, and lawn mower; working outdoors daily with exposure to physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, and heat; and discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like. Work will also require practicing “safe from harm” during summer camps when the children are at camp and watching out for the safety of children who are outdoors.Additional Information Camp Staff Orientation will be held 06/13/2022 – 06/19/2022and participation is required.
