Job Summary
Performs a variety of skilled maintenance and preventative work for buildings and grounds including heating, ventilation, electrical, and air conditioning work as well as day-to-day routine maintenance and repairs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of general building and grounds maintenance practices and procedures.
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tool, and practices used in at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades.
Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, construction, and air conditioning equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved.
Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment used in the trades involved.
Ability to detect defects in equipment and to make proper repairs or adjustments.
Ability to learn by method of on-the-job training including ability to follow instructions.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or G.E.D., with two years course work from a technical or vocational school in the major trades including construction, HVAC, plumbing, or electrical preferred, and Three to five years’ experience in the construction industry performing skilled work in one of the major trades, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or carpentry, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Ability to meet attendance requirements.
Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language effectively.
Ability to drive vehicles in a safe manner.
Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army.
Ability to work independently and with limited supervision.
Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with Salvation Army officers, employees, and the community.
Ability to exert the physical energy required to performing maintenance work.
Extensive amount of physical effort required associated with lifting, moving, and carrying heavy objects (more than 50 lbs.) frequently.
