THE SALVATION ARMY JOB DESCRIPTION   Job Code  – 8441NE Title: Sorting Room Worker Employee Name:   Department Family Store Location: Ardmore, OK Job Family:                              Laborers and Helpers Hire Date: Reports to: Family Store Manager Direct Reports:                          FLSA: Non-Exempt None                                               Revision Date: 2/10/2017     Job Summary Receives, sorts, and prepares donated items for display in the store; determines suitability of items based on established standards; assists in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the warehouse area. Assumes responsibilities of Store Clerk as needed. Essential Functions This job description should not be interpreted as all inclusive.  It is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this position.  The incumbent may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this job description.   Sorting (85%) Receives, inspects and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brack, etc. according to the category and condition.   Selects items suitable for store display and distributes same to appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing; discards items in accordance with established procedures.   Tags items with specially coded tickets and/or prices in accordance with established procedures.   Hangs clothes on hangers and places same on clothes racks.   Packs items in boxes and marks boxes accordingly; assists in transporting boxes to appropriate storage area.   Prepares non-suitable clothes for the bailer.   Lifts and carries items to the appropriate destination for further processing, storage or displaying in store.   Maintains warehouse area in a neat and orderly manner; cleans floors, tables and work areas.   Clerking (10%) Assists customers purchasing items from The Salvation Army.   Assists customers by explaining store policy and responding to questions regarding the pricing and/or purchasing of items; ensures that all customers visiting the store have a pleasant experience.   Assists customers who are donating items to The Salvation Army; directs customers to the proper loading/unloading area, may assist with hauling donations to the storage area; prepares and provides tax receipts as needed.   Places and arranges items in the store as directed; checks all store displays to ensure that items are maintained and displayed in a neat and orderly manner; rotates and/or rearranges stock as directed; returns items to the proper location after customer's have handled.   Answers the store telephone in a tactful and courteous manner; assists customers by responding to questions and providing directions and/or general information; may schedule and record donation pick-ups.   Cleans all display racks and shelves; sweeps and mops floors; cleans windows and mirrors; ensures that the store is maintained in a clean and inviting manner.   Opens and/or closes store doors in accordance with the store schedule.   Other Responsibilities (05%)   Assists customers in carrying purchased/donated items in/out of the store.   Monitors work of volunteers working in store.   Performs other related work as required.   Materials and Equipment Hand Truck                           General Office Equipment                 Pricing Equipment   Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of effective customer service techniques.   Ability to meet attendance requirements.   Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.   Ability to perform routine mathematical computations.   MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED   Education and Experience High School diploma or G.E.D. and experience working in a retail store preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.   Certifications/Licenses None   Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods of time.   Physical ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull light objects (less than 25 lbs.).   Moderate mobility:  duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis.  Distance of travel is usually within the same building.     Working Conditions Work is performed in a warehouse environment where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.   Statement of Purpose This document provides descriptive information about the above Salvation Army position.
