POSITION TITLE: Early Childhood Education Assistant Director

DEPARTMENT: Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center (Kroc Center Hawaii)

SUPERVISOR: ECE Director

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

CLASSIFICATION: Full Time, Salary Range $46,800 - $48,672

SUMMARY: The ECE Assistant Director plays a crucial role in the management and operation of the center. This position assists the Director in overseeing all aspects of daily operations, staff management, curriculum development and accreditation, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the children in our care. The ECE Assistant Director supports a positive and nurturing environment, fostering the growth and development of both children and staff.

The ECE Assistant Director will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the way he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community at the Kroc Keiki Learning Center.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. CDA Credentials from Accredited College or University in Early Childhood Education and 12 or more credits in ECE or Child Development coursework.
  2. At least five years of daycare or preschool teaching experience.
  3. Demonstrated teaching and leadership abilities.
  4. Proven computer abilities with Microsoft Office or comparable software.
  5. Minimum two (2) years of administrative experience.

An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be accepted.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Master's degree in early childhood education or a related field of study.
  2. Director/teacher qualified by State Licensing agency (CANOE registry
  3. Experience with RMS (records management system)
  4. Extensive knowledge of The Salvation Army Philosophy and Policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Operations:

  1. Assist and oversee daily duties that might be temporary in the event the Director is not available.
  2. Assist ECE Director in leading department meetings.
  3. Work with administrators and teachers to offer fresh, creative solutions for difficult situations and systemic problems.
  4. Assists with formal written performance evaluations and sets annual goals with staff.
  5. Provides appropriate feedback to staff on work performance and other job-related activities as needed.
  6. Serve as an expert resource and mentor for new and developing KKLC staff.
  7. Help to lead various areas of the school including course planning/curriculum development, professional development, special education, staff scheduling, standardized testing improvement or other subjects, depending on the needs of the department.
  8. Ensures equipment and the facility are clean, well maintained, and safe always. Assist in the daily inspection of the environment to identify potentially hazardous objects or situations. Reports information to ECE Director.
  9. Creates a welcoming climate for both child and parent, especially at drop-off and pick-up times.

Classrooms:

  1. Leads and teaches own class when need arises.
  2. Plans and implements activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and social needs of the children in the program.
  3. Prepares the classroom at the beginning of the day and performs cleanup and set up for the next day's activities.
  4. Provides weekly and monthly schedules of activities. Establishes routines and provides positive guidance.
  5. Provides activities that introduce math, literacy and other academic concepts and culturally appropriate programs and activities.
  6. Provides daily lesson/activity plans which integrate our co-developed Bible thematic units and include a variety of experiences and activities for children including songs, games, and storytelling.
  7. Ensures children are always supervised, adhering to the Salvation Army procedures for Protecting the Mission. Provides a safe and secure environment for children to feel comfortable and builds children's esteem.
  8. Clearly and effectively communicates in a manner that children understand. Implements positive discipline when required.
  9. Observes children and makes notes of progress. Develops and maintains current, accurate and confidential files.
  10. Communicates with parents, discusses children's development with parents and keeps parents informed of program expectations, program activities and their child's progress.
  11. Plans together with and provides information, training, and guidance to Assistant Teacher, Aides, trainees, and volunteers.
  12. Promotes team spirit and cooperation between staff, volunteers, and parents.
  13. Teaches proper eating habits and personal hygiene. Serves meals and snacks in accordance with nutritional guidelines.
  14. Knows emergency procedures.
  15. Attends scheduled KKLC Family Events outside of regular work hours.
  16. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  17. Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center Hawaii.
  18. Attend staff meetings and other administrative meetings.
  19. Maintain regular and punctual work attendance.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

  1. Caring for children can be stressful. The ECE Assistant Director must ensure that children are always supervised, and that children are involved in safe and appropriate activities. There may be several situations happening at once, and the ECE Assistant Director must be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time.
  2. Able to prioritize and organize work assignments and take projects from beginning through completion.
  3. Able to perform job functions with attention to detail, speed, and accuracy.
  4. Able to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
  5. Is self-motivated, energetic, enthusiastic, motivational, and able to maintain a self-directed schedule.
  6. Genuine interest and commitment to providing quality service.
  7. Respond to crisis situations in a calm and effective manner and remain calm when resolving problems using good judgment.
  8. Must possess the self-discipline necessary to perform repetitive tasks without lowering quality of work.
  9. Able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals.
  10. Exercise good judgment and comfortable taking initiative with projects.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Lifting and carrying children and equipment and may spend time sitting on the floor or child sized furniture.
  2. Expected to clean and maintain equipment and facility and may move throughout the community with children.
  3. May encounter children who are ill and/or contagious and must take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, staff, and themselves.
  4. Will be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be several activities and situations happening at once, and the ECE Assistant Director will have to supervise all the children.
  5. The position also requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching, and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 50-75 pounds and occasionally more than 75 pounds.

COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:

The position requires:

  1. Effective communication and people skills.
  2. Conduct regular staff meetings to facilitate communication and professional development.
  3. Collaborate with the Director to evaluate staff performance and provide constructive feedback.
  4. Handle parent inquires, concerns, and communication effectively and professionally.
  5. Foster positive relationships with parents and guardians through open communication and regular updates.
  6. Organize and participate in parent-teacher conferences and family engagement.
  7. Assist in maintaining accreditation and quality standards set by accrediting agencies.

EQUIPMENT NEEDS:

Equipment: Proficient with current Microsoft software computer programs including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint, e-mail, internet, and standard office equipment and systems.

CERTIFICATES & LICENSES:

  1. The candidate must have a valid driver's license and insured transportation and participation in The Salvation Army's Fleet Safety Program on an annual basis.
  2. Director/teacher qualified by State Licensing agency (CANOE registry).
