What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Lifeguards position at The Salvation Army Western PA Division?
Camp Allegheny is hiring Lifeguards for its 2025 Summer Camp Season.
Camp Allegheny is 110 acres of fields, rivers, woods and a state-of-the-art facility just one hour north of Pittsburgh. Certified by the American Camp Association, the curriculum at Camp Allegheny is focused on Christian principles and promotes an awareness of God in nature and a relationship with Him.
Job Summary:
Lifeguards assist with the operation of Camp Allegheny’s waterfront and swimming activities and help maintain standards that lead to a quality program.
Responsible to the Camp Directors and Assistant Camp Director; directly supervised by the Waterfront Director under guidance of the Program Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A personal relationship with Christ and a desire to share you faith with others.
- Current life guarding certification.
- Current CPR and first aid certifications. (Camp will provide.)
- Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.
- Willing to guard at both the creek and the pool, and lead activities as assigned.
- Ability to relate to one's peer group.
- Ability to accept supervision.
- Positive and flexible.
- Enthusiastic and sense of humor.
- At least 18 years of age.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Monitor the swimming pool or creek following guidelines of the American Red Cross. This may include big events and staff events.
- Under the supervision of the Waterfront Director, prepare and teach one lesson plan for a water activity each session.
- Work with Waterfront Director to set up waterfront area and teach staff their responsibilities in activity.
- Teach and monitor proper use of equipment, at both the pool and creek.
- Assist with teaching skills, leading activities, or presenting devotional thought as assigned.
- Check equipment and make (or file for) repairs and conduct daily check of area for safety and cleanliness.
- Assist with the daily cleaning of the pool and its components, the deck, and the bathhouse deck.
- When assigned to the creek, assist the Boating Coordinator with guarding, boating, or fishing as directed.
- Assist with classifying swimmers each opening day.
- Assist with enforcing the rotation of look-outs at the pool.
- On rainy days, assist with leading indoor activities for campers.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Assist with preparation of the tabernacle and gym for opening and closing days
- Participate in evening programs or big events as assigned by the Program Director
- Be a constructive member of the staff contributing in every way possible to the health, harmony, and happiness of the Camp Allegheny Family
- Ability to communicate and train staff and campers in safety regulations and emergency procedures
- Physical ability to respond appropriately and quickly to situations requiring first aid
Camp Allegheny runs from Mid-June to early August.
Lifeguards will be paid a salary of $2,600 -$2,800 for the summer season
