Position Overview

The Asphalt Plant Maintenance Manager-in-Training (MIT) role is designed to develop the skills and expertise necessary to manage the maintenance operations of asphalt plants throughout the Northwest division. This individual will work closely with experienced maintenance forepersons and plant personnel to gain hands on experience in maintaining plant equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards and optimizing plant operations.


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


  • Partner with experienced maintenance forepersons to understand workflows, equipment operations and maintenance procedures.
  • Assist with inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing plant equipment at various sites.
    • This includes having the ability to weld, fabricate and perform electrical repairs as required.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks to ensure the plant operates efficiently and meets production goals.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and optimize production processes.
  • Ability to detect safety hazards and/or malfunctions and respond accordingly.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management to resolve maintenance issues promptly.
  • Work closely with plant operators, maintenance forepersons and plant personnel to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
  • Ability to access all areas of an asphalt plant to perform necessary maintenance and repairs.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations affecting asphalt plant production, safety environmental, state, federal, and company policies; ensure observance of such regulations; and ensure compliance with all regulations and permit conditions.

  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.
  • Strict adherence to Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies.
  • Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all Shelly Company employees. Employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required. This role will also include opportunities to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Solid problem-solving ability required.
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds as needed.


Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.


Education and Experience


High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • For individuals who demonstrate the capability to learn this position in a reasonable amount of time, the company is willing to consider providing necessary on-the-job-training in order for an individual to meet the qualifications/requirements of the role.


Personal Protective Equipment


Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position: Welding Gloves, Hard Hat, Hearing Protection, Padlocks for Lockout/Tagout, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, use of Seatbelt and harnesses when required.


Language Skills:


Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situation to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.


Mathematical Skills:


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


Reasoning Ability:


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.


The employee must regularly lift and/or move more than 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.


Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but may require protective equipment. The employee will be continuously work with others. The employee will occasionally work in hot, cold, wet weather. They might occasionally be exposed to noise and moving equipment.
