ABOUT THE POSITION
Peer Supports provide structured, scheduled services promoting recovery, self-determination, self-advocacy, engagement in self-care and wellness, educate/teach independent living skills, and assist with community integration. Certified Peer Support Specialists (CPSS) who has self-identified as a person(s) in recovery from a mental health or substance use disorder. Ability to deliver services that are focused on the participant and not on their diagnosis with the emphasis of aiding in building rehabilitation skills. Able to teach and emphasize use of coping skills for management of symptoms, accessing community resources, development of supports, and ability to respond to crisis challenges of participants. Ability to work in collaboration with other mental health or substance services, and independently provide recovery services
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conduct outreach and build relationships in an efforts to inform community of agency services and assist new clients.
- Provide and facilitate community visits with participants in various settings weekly as assigned by program supervisor.
- Adhering to the peer support principles, values, and ethics
- Delivery of services based on the principles and philosophies of recovery to provide peer support services
- Ability to work in partnership with participant to explore and identify barriers to accessing community resources and engaging with service providers
- Ability to utilize own lived experience to support, encourage, and enhance participant’s work on their recovery based on the goals outlined in Person-Centered Plan
- Implementing interventions of recovery goals
- Ability to model and mentor recovery values, attitudes, beliefs, and personal actions to encourage resilience, wellness, and motivation to participants in various settings
- Ability to model, teach about in share decision-making tools to promote participants taking ownership for personal responsibility
- Modeling and teaching on healthy social interactions
- Teaching and assisting participants with community inclusion i.e., how to navigate the community, access resources/services, and develop a sense of community
- Assisting participants in navigating medical, social services, and medical systems/settings
- Recognizing and responding to potential conditions/situations emergent both physical and behavioral health, using crisis response interventions, collaboration, and consultation with appropriate stakeholders and resources/services according to agency standards
- Working with participants
- Ability to collaborate with the program Qualified Professional to assess their own strengths and areas of growth and develop a supervision plan.
- Ability to explore with participants the importance and creating wellness identity through use of shared lived experiences
- Promoting self-advocacy by educating participants learning their human and legal rights and assisting/encouraging participant to exercise their rights
- Following standards and program outcomes as outlined in the NC Division of Medical Assistance Clinical Coverage Policy 8G
- Completing all other assigned clinical-administrative tasks within the scope of practice
WORK/ CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or general equivalence degree (GED)
- NC Certification for Certified Peer Support Specialists
- Preferred for candidates to have at least 6 mos to a year paid experience with adults with SPMI
- Completed and maintains required trainings set forth by NC Division of Medical Assistance Clinical Coverage Policy 8G
- Complete all agency in-house or registered trainings
- Work within the scope of training and knowledge based on level of education and certification
- Basic knowledge about severe and persistent mental illness and substance use disorders
- Works within your scope of practice according to credential, training, and skills
- Understand the various levels of care based on the continuum of services
- Flexible and willing to work in a “non-traditional” work environment
- Employ treatment interventions and activities as outlined in the NC Division of Medical Assistance Clinical Coverage Policy
- Implements the use of evidence-based interventions and concepts to individuals and natural supports in community settings
