Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
The Associate Head Electrician supports the Head Electrician in the execution of all aspects of lighting operations across The Smith Center’s performing venues—including Reynolds Hall, Myron’s, Troesh Theatre, and Symphony Park, including assisting with the implementation of lighting designs, programming, operation, and maintenance of lighting systems and equipment for a wide range of productions and events. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate inventory, supporting the preparation of lighting plots, and ensuring the functionality and safety of all lighting and electrical components. The Associate Head Electrician also provides technical support during productions, collaborates with clients and production teams, and delivers exceptional lighting experiences by upholding the artistic integrity and technical excellence of each production and event, while ensuring compliance with safety standards and industry best practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in advancing technical requirements with clients and touring productions, ensuring seamless integration of lighting and electrical needs.
- Supports the Head Electrician in evaluating equipment and labor needs for all events, providing input based on production requirements.
- Participates and communicate event-specific technical information for upcoming events to staff during production meetings, ensuring thorough preparation and execution.
- Contributes to the integration of touring production lighting systems with The Smith Center’s equipment, including console interfaces, power distribution, and company switch termination.
- Assists with programming and operating lighting control systems during productions and events as directed by the Head Electrician.
- Supports the maintenance and organization of lighting equipment, including fixtures, dimmers, control consoles, and power distribution systems.
- Ensures accurate tracking inventory of consumable items such as lamps, gels, and other essential lighting materials, ensuring timely replacements as needed.
- Helps maintain detailed schematics and accurate documentation of all AC and theatrical circuits across all venues of The Smith Center to ensure efficient troubleshooting and system reliability.
- Track and maintain records of all equipment sent out for repairs, ensuring proper documentation and follow-up.
- Participates in routine inspections and preventative maintenance of lighting systems, reporting any issues to the Head Electrician for resolution.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and industry standards for all lighting operations and equipment handling.
- Provide guidance and training to crew members, temporary staff, and subcontracted technicians to enhance their understanding of The Smith Center’s technical systems, safety procedures, and operational standards.
- Stay updated on industry advancements and technologies to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of lighting innovation.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
Required Education, and Experience
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
- Trade school certification or formal education in theatrical lighting, electrical systems, or a related field is highly preferred.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in theatre industry operations, encompassing live entertainment, events, and technical production management, as a lighting programmer or engineer, with a demonstrated ability to execute complex lighting operations for live productions.
- Knowledge of rigging systems and safety standards related to theatrical lighting operations.
- Familiarity with advancements in lighting technology, including LED systems, automated fixtures, and wireless lighting controls, is highly desirable.
- Experience with leading and training temporary staff and contracted workers.

- Proficient in conducting thorough analysis and evaluation of data, report findings, integrating key insights, and presenting detailed findings in a clear and compelling manner.
- Highly organized and superior attention to detail while coordinating and performing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and execute objectives with minimal supervision.
- Ability to exercise discretion and uphold confidentiality when managing sensitive information and handling confidential matters.

- Availability to work varied shifts and extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as determined by production schedules and events.
Computer Skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Advanced knowledge and use of AutoCAD (or similar program) and Vectorworks applications.
- Experience working with Momentus Elite (VenueOps) or Event Booking calendar program.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new software or technological advancements in theatrical lighting and control systems.
Other Skills and Abilities
- Possesses comprehensive technical expertise and strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with lighting consoles, electrical systems, and power distribution.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience and comprehensive working knowledge of digital control and dimming systems, including but not limited to Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC systems preferred).
- Advanced programming skills and operational knowledge of:
- ETC Eos family of consoles
- MA Lighting GrandMA2, GrandMA3 series of consoles
- DMX , sACN, and Artnet protocols
- Proficiency in AC/DC high-voltage and low-voltage systems, including power distribution, load calculations, power factors, and safety protocols.
- Ability to design and create accurate lighting plots using industry-standard software, such as:
- AutoCAD
- Vectorworks
- WYSIWYG
- ShowCAD or similar software platforms
- Demonstrated ability to manage and maintain accurate lighting equipment inventory and schematics

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must be able to qualify for licenses and permits if required by federal, state, and local regulations during the course of employment.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must possess, or be willing to obtain, an OSHA 30 Certification, demonstrating familiarity with OSHA safety standards and compliance requirements.
- Must be able to meet and continue to meet any applicable Theatrical regulation as mandated by OSHA, ESTA & USITT.
