Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Education and Outreach Event Intern at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts reports to the Associate Director, Education and Outreach, and is responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, and execution of events and programming designed to engage students, educators, families, and community partners in meaningful art education experiences. The Education and Outreach Event Intern will assist with day-to-day operations of education events, on-site programming, and community engagement initiatives and efforts. This role provides hands-on experience in arts education and nonprofit event management, offering the opportunity to contribute to impactful programming that enriches the community through access to the performing arts.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the coordination and execution of education and outreach events, including, but not limited to, Student Share, Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards, student matinees, and Camp Broadway. 
  • Assists with pre-event logistics such as preparing and organizing event materials, setting up activity areas, and ensuring the venue is ready for student and guest arrival.
  • Coordinate the ordering and distribution of meals, snacks, and hospitality items
  • Provide onsite support during events by greeting students, teachers, and chaperones, and assisting with check-in and directions to create a welcoming and efficient guest experience.
  • Facilitate student engagement by answering questions and responding to needs during educational programming.
  • Direct school groups to their designated seating areas or program zones during student matinees and other large-scale events.
  • Assist with post-event breakdown and clean-up to ensure venues are restored to operational standards. 
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high level of professionalism and serve as an enthusiastic ambassador for The Smith Center’s art education mission. 

 Required Education, and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, actively pursuing completion of a degree; desired majors include performing arts disciplines, arts administration, education, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated passion for arts education and a strong interest in working within a performing arts or non-profit cultural organization.
  • Prior experience with a non-profit organization, educational outreach, or youth engagement program preferred; familiarity with arts education programming is a plus
  • Experience as a participant in arts programs (i.e., theatre, music, dance, visual arts, etc.) either as a student, performer, or teaching artist.

  • Highly organized, dependable, and capable of managing multiple priorities and tasks in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing collaboration and problem-solving

 Computer Skills

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Google Drive, and Google Forms.

 Other Skills and Abilities

  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as determined by event and programming schedules. 
  • Desire and ability to accept all levels of challenges
  • Exhibit a professional appearance 
  • Maintain a dependable, professional, and courteous office environment

  • This position will require sitting for long periods, standing, bending, and walking, as well as using fine motor skills, such as finger dexterity for typing. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and peripheral vision.
  • Ability to regularly lift, move, carry, push, and pull 25 pounds or more.
  • Ability to occasionally reach, bend, twist, stoop, stack, crouch, kneel, and balance when performing job duties in varying work areas such as confined spaces. 
  • Ability to physically stand, walk, and climb stairs on a consistent basis.
  • This position could be exposed to loud noises, and frequent phone conversations, and requires average to above average visual acuity and hearing.
  • Most of this job will be performed indoors in a climate-controlled environment.

 Must be able to qualify for licenses and permits if required by federal, state, and local regulations during the course of employment.

Pay Transparency

The hourly rate for this on-call and non-exempt position is $18.00 per hour plus retirement benefits.
