The Position
The role of Shelter Staff is to ensure the safety of both clients and volunteers while managing daily operations within the shelters. Preference will be given to candidates skilled in de-escalation, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed care. Ongoing training will be provided. Additionally, Shelter Staff are responsible for maintaining clean and organized shelter spaces, and for ensuring that all activities, incidents, and the needs of both the shelter and clients are clearly and consistently communicated to the appropriate Sophia Way team members for support and follow-up.
Responsibilities
The essential functions of this role include but are not limited to:
- Monitor facilities and maintain a safe, supportive environment within the shelter.
- Assist and support clients with following shelter procedures and completing routines.
- Intervene in client crises and help clients work through conflict with others living in the shelter using de-escalation techniques and a trauma informed care approach.
- Communicate observations and interactions with clients to shelter management through documentation in daily log.
- Complete documentation for meal donations and as needed for client reporting; set up meals, following all food safety guidelines.
- Cleaning and organization of the shelter spaces, including restocking of supplies and completing shelter laundry.
- Participate in program, Department, agency meetings, and relevant trainings as required, as well as inter-agency advocacy groups.
- Adhere to agency policy, procedures, and professional code of conduct and ethics.
- Other duties as required.
Education and experience
- One year working with the homeless population, preferably with women experiencing homelessness.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above.
Qualifications
- Ability to maintain clear personal and professional boundaries.
- Ability to work effectively in an evolving and often demanding or chaotic environment.
- Ability to complete assignments and tasks independently.
- Experience working with a diverse population with sensitivity to differences in culture, religion, sexual orientation, race, age, physical and/or mental illness.
- Ability to remain alert and on duty for the duration of shifts.
- Ability to respond calmly and responsibly in emergency and crisis situations.
- Ability to communicate well both orally and in written form, and follow detailed instructions.
- Basic computer skills including the use of Google Suite programs.
- Ability to accurately document information for required client and staff records.
- Ability to effectively interact with clients, co-workers, and volunteers of diverse backgrounds and treat each individual with respect, dignity, compassion, and in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Physical ability to lift at least 35 pounds on a regular basis; ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, and perform light cleaning duties.
- Current CPR/First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and food handlers certificate, or ability to obtain immediately after hire.
- Current driver's license.
- Recent TB test or ability to obtain immediately after hire (must have negative TB test results to work within the shelters).
Position reports to Programs Managers and Shelter Leads
ScheduleThis position is assigned to the swing shift (3:00 p.m. - 11:15 p.m.), with scheduled days to be coordinated with the hiring managers. Some weekend work will be required.
Compensation and Benefits
The base wage for this position is $22.66 per hour. Employees working the swing shift will receive an additional $0.50 per hour on top of the base wage.
