Middle School Theatre Tech Teacher
Part-time (25%) One-Year Position
To begin August 2025
Spence’s Performing Arts Department seeks an accomplished and visionary educator to join the school’s Middle School Theatre program. Understanding the importance, nature, scope, and impact of our events and performances within the community, the Theatre Tech Teacher will work with fellow Performing Arts colleagues to fulfill our mission of nurturing imagination and self-expression in a collaborative environment. We believe that active participation in and exposure to the arts expands our students’ horizons, enhancing their lives both at Spence and beyond.
Responsibilities:
- Teach a 7th and 8th grade Technical Theater class including: lighting, sound, stagecraft and set construction, prop design and construction and costume design and construction
- Guide students through hands-on experience in building and operating technical equipment for school productions.
- Encourage creativity and teamwork in a safe and supportive environment.
- Collaborate with the Middle School Theater Director implementing curriculum that includes the behind the scenes of theater production
- Oversee student involvement in the technical crew, assigning roles and responsibilities.
- Ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and functioning for each performance.
- Train students on proper handling of technical equipment, including lighting rigs, sound systems, and set construction tools.
- Act as a liaison between the technical crew and the rest of the production team.
- Work as part of a larger team of performing arts teachers across divisions to coordinate and implement curricula
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Possesses sustained experience teaching a school theater program
- Finds joy in working with children and in school life
- Approaches work with optimism, energy, kindness, and a sense of humor
- Demonstrates cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Has excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Possesses the ability to work across departmental lines, fostering collaboration and cooperation amongst faculty, staff, and administration
- Has strong written and verbal communication skills
- Has an advanced degree or equivalent experience
