Position Summary:
The Financial Counselor will provide financial assistance and guidance to patients undergoing treatment at our medical oncology office. This position involves explaining insurance coverage, assisting with payment plans, identifying financial assistance programs, and ensuring that patients understand their financial responsibilities. The Financial Counselor will work closely with patients, insurance providers, and healthcare teams to facilitate smooth financial processes while maintaining a high level of confidentiality and compassion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Insurance Verification & Billing:
- Verify patient insurance coverage, co-pays, deductibles, and benefits for oncology treatments.
- Provide detailed financial information and estimates to patients regarding treatment costs.
- Ensure the proper coding and submission of insurance claims related to oncology care.
- Financial Assistance & Counseling:
- Assist patients in understanding their insurance benefits, out-of-pocket costs, and financial responsibilities.
- Identify financial assistance programs available through pharmaceutical companies, non-profits, and other resources.
- Work with patients to create payment plans and discuss available financial options.
- Patient Support:
- Serve as the main point of contact for patients seeking financial guidance or assistance.
- Address patient inquiries related to billing, payments, and insurance coverage.
- Educate patients on how to navigate the financial aspects of their care, including cost-saving options and available support services.
- Collaboration:
- Collaborate with oncology physicians, nurses, and other office staff to ensure timely and accurate billing.
- Coordinate with external financial support agencies to secure funding or aid for patients when applicable.
- Documentation & Compliance:
- Maintain accurate records of patient interactions, payment arrangements, and financial assistance applications.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA and all other confidentiality and legal requirements regarding patient financial information.
- Reporting:
- Provide regular reports on financial counseling activities, payment collections, and outstanding balances to management.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Previous experience in medical billing, financial counseling, or oncology care is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of insurance verification, payment systems, and financial assistance programs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex financial concepts to patients.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and empathy.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Proficient in using office software (e.g., Microsoft Office) and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Work Environment:
