MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in biological, physical, natural, or agricultural sciences and three (3) years of related professional experience; or

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university as described above and two (2) two years of related professional experience as described above; or

A doctorate from an accredited college or university as described above.

Certain positions within this class require individuals to meet specific federal or state regulations as identified by the employing agency.

Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

Occasional travel, including overnight and sometimes up to two weeks at a time on an emergency program, is required.

JOB DUTIES:

General Statement: This is a professional position responsible for resource management and development for diagnostic staff in support of the plant and plant pest regulatory activities of the Division of Plant Industry.

Serves as the Collections Manager of the Florida State Collection of Arthropods (FSCA). Responsible for tasks related to the entire resource, in addition to duties in the assigned taxonomic specialty. These duties include maintaining records to generate the annual report (loans, donations, tours, visitors, etc.), keeping up resource registrations and certificates, assisting with projects and grant proposals that benefit the entire resource (digitization, infrastructure improvements, assist managing student volunteers and interns, website development, etc.), managing resource specific supplies (specimen housing, curation tools, specimen preparation, etc.), and assisting with acquisition of donated resources to build the collection, etc.

Assists with diagnosing plant pest problems. Performs limited identifications and classifications of taxa to genus and species, or to the lowest taxonomic unit possible, using morphometric analysis and other scientific methods of identification of specimens submitted to the Bureau. Writes necessary reports and assists in publications regarding these taxa and new techniques internally or in scientific journals to support activities of the Division. Participates in field surveys and prepares and presents instructional material for in-service training of district personnel.

Maintains broad knowledge, currency, and professional standing in biosystematics and collections management through communication and correspondence with other recognized collections managers and expert systematists. Acts as a liaison with other museum collections and organizations, help oversee website and FSCA related outreach. Reports on activities of FSCA.

Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of current systematic theory and practices, current taxonomy, museum management, and curation.
  • Knowledge of traditional (morphological), current (molecular), and other diagnostic methods and techniques.
  • Skill in the use of scientific laboratory and specialized equipment such as field equipment, computers, genetic analysis equipment, and various microscopes.
  • Ability to plan, design and conduct projects to improve infrastructure.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments, delegate tasks and supervise volunteers.
  • Ability to prepare adminstrative documents and publish results.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to manage resources including funding, personnel, equipment and supplies.
