Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a Health Educator position for The Florida Department of Health in Gadsden County. The incumbent will provide client services and breastfeeding education to participants enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). To meet the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Department of Health, and Center for Disease Control and United States Department of Health and Human Services, the employee provides education, evaluation, support, and promotion of breastfeeding, as the normal and optimal feeding of infants and young children. All work is performed under the supervision of a Community Health Workers Supervisor III.
Incumbent interviews participants to obtain demographic information and completes necessary forms with the required signatures and dates. Advises WIC participants of their rights and obligations. Incumbent performs eligibility duties at certification of new clients and recertification of existing clients. Incumbent verifies eligibility requirements with all clients. Incumbent provides voter registration assistance; at the time the client applies for services, when the client is recertified, or when client reports an address change. Incumbent will also assist with benefit issuance, discuss available benefits, and review benefits for accuracy. Incumbent informs participant when certification expires and what is required for recertification. Incumbent assists with scheduling next appointment prior to client leaving clinic. Answers incoming calls to WIC office, assists with callers’ needs by scheduling appointments, providing appointment dates, transferring calls to respective team members, etc.
Performs accurate weights, heights, and hemoglobin tests, as needed, for certification of WIC clients. Performs follow-up weights, heights, and hemoglobin tests, as directed by the WIC nutrition staff (WIC Supervisor, CPA, nutrition educator, nutritionist). Staff inputs collected data in FL-WiSE charting system.
Incumbent will provide 2nd low risk nutrition education contact with clients, as specified by CPA, or as needed.
Incumbent will provide breastfeeding counselling under the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Grant. Complete certain areas of the WIC Breastfeeding Model for Peer Counseling that relate to job.
Incumbent will have responsibilities in the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program: Assign and issue Farmers’ Market Coupons to clients. Keep a tracking log of coupons issued to clients.
Perform other related duties as assigned and within the realm of the classifications of a Health Educator.
Incumbent will submit EAR Reports in accordance with established agency and division guidelines. Miscellaneous duties, as requested by WIC Coordinator.
Attend required DOH Gadsden meetings and participate in WIC outreach events promoting breastfeeding and/or WIC services. If fluent in another language, may be required to assist with translation to ensure quality client services.

Qualifications:
Preferred:
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in health education, community, or public health; or
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in nursing, one of the biological sciences, education, public relations, communications or one of the behavioral sciences and one year of professional experience in providing health education services; or
- A master's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, one of the biological sciences, education, public relations, communications or one of the behavioral sciences can substitute for the required professional experience.
