Position Description


This position represents the State of Florida in all criminal and civil cases as prescribed by law and at the pleasure and direction of the elected State Attorney.


The Office of the State Attorney for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit is responsible for prosecuting all criminal violations of state law that occur throughout the Circuit, which encompasses all of Hillsborough County, including the incorporated cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City.


In addition to the primary responsibility of prosecuting criminal offenses, our office is actively involved in a variety of community organizations dedicated to preventing crime, reducing recidivism, and supporting victims. Our office also proactively engages in the community in order to improve communication, facilitate transparency, and promote trust with the citizens of Hillsborough County.


Job Duties may include, but are not limited to:


  • Assist State Attorney in presenting criminal cases in court.
  • Administer cases for felony, misdemeanor, juvenile, and other types of prosecutions.
  • Prepare indictments, informations and petitions.
  • Prepare cases for prosecution including discovery and depositions.
  • Develop trial strategy, conduct plea negotiations, and perform research.
  • Interact with victims, police, and witnesses to make critical decisions.
  • Attend all court hearings.
  • Prepare legal documents and reports for court proceedings.
  • Select jurors, argue motions, meet with judges and court personnel, and conduct trials in court.
  • Attend and present evidence to grand juries.
  • Manage communication with stakeholders.
  • Train staff on legal issues and goals.
  • Organize and conduct workshops and seminars for stakeholders.
  • Provide administrative assistance to State Attorney as required.
  • Supervise attorneys and staff as assigned.
  • Participate in training opportunities provided by the office. This may include attendance at courses, training exercises, or training experiences.
  • Comply with all public records statutes and policies.

Essential Requirements:


  • Dependable and routine in-office attendance.
  • Ability to focus and pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to conduct legal research and apply legal analysis to factual scenarios in an ethical manner. Possess public speaking skills.
  • Efficient typing and computer skills and ability to operate office equipment.
  • Effective and efficient communication skills and ability to interact professionally with other employees, members of the public and stakeholders.
  • Perform quality work within deadlines.
  • Ability to read and follow rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Work effectively as a team contributor as well as independently.
  • Travel as required.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours per week. Attorneys may be required to attend court hearings conducted outside of normal office hours and are required to adequately prepare cases prior to court hearings.

Qualifications:

A law degree from accredited law school, admittance to Florida Bar and continued membership in good standing. This includes compliance with all membership requirements.
