Position Summary & Responsibilities:
This position supervises and maintains discipline, safety, and control of residents at all times.
Applicants must meet a minimum score on the Corrections Officer test to be considered for an interview.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Observe and recall surroundings, events, residents’ behavior, activities, and interactions while enforcing policies, rules, and regulations.
- Interact with residents and co-workers to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Performs searches of residents, persons, and physical areas to prevent and control contraband.
- Follows established security procedures in controlling visitor, staff, resident, and vehicular traffic to prevent the admittance or exit of authorized persons and the introduction of contraband; and takes and reports periodic counts of residents.
- Responds to emergency situations in accordance with appropriate contingency plans. Remain calm during stressful situations.
- Write clear and complete sentences; climb stairs; remain alert over long periods of time; and use physical force to subdue violent and resisting residents.
This position is subject to regular rotation of post and/or shift assignment within the facility.
The incumbent must be capable of performing the position’s Essential Physical Functions. A full position description and required Essential/Event Driven Physical Functions for this classification can be obtained by contacting the recruiter listed in this posting.
An initial 12-month probationary period is required for new Corrections Officers.
Corrections Officers are required to weapons qualify under KDOC guidelines during initial training and on an annual basis.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Licensing & Certification:
- Valid driver’s license
- Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 18 years of age at the time of appointment
- Capable of performing the position’s Essential Physical Functions
- Free of felony conviction(s)
- Free of any felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime as set forth in 18 U.S.C. § 922 (d) (9) and (g) (9).
- No DUI convictions within the last 24 months
Post-Offer, Pre-Employment Requirements:
Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test and physical unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency.
