Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary: Performs correctional work in maintaining order and supervision of the Lansing Correctional Facility. Duties and responsibilities involve being assigned as officer in charge of cell house, dormitory, or a living unit; supervision of subordinate Correctional Officer(s) and/or residents; or being assigned to work any shift or post which may change in accordance with needs of the institution. Cooperates with other Corrections Officers of all ranks in exchanging information and accomplishing the long and short-range objectives of the Lansing Correctional Facility.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Ensures that ordered, disciplined, secure, sanitary and safe conditions are established and maintained in cell house, during their living quarters, at meals, in classrooms, at work sites, activity and program areas, in the hospital, kitchen and bathing areas.
- Engages in or supervises taking and reporting periodic counts of residents to ensure that all are present and accounted for, searches of residents at their work, recreation, in the infirmary, while in food service and in their housing units to prevent the secreting of contraband and fabrication of lethal weapons, by physical pat down in either standing or prone position.
- Supervises the daily activity schedules (wake-up call, work call, meal lines, sick call, recreation yard scheduling and visiting programs among others). Ensures that each resident is aware of his assignment and/or scheduled appointments and that proper shakedown procedures have been conducted prior to the resident entering or leaving.
- Attempts to modify for improvement antisocial attitudes in residents; represents free society by providing a good citizen role model by demonstrating skillful communications, by maintaining a neat and well-groomed appearance and by always presenting a high level deportment.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Licensing & Certification: Driver's License
Minimum Qualifications: Must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for the COI (A); be at least 20 years of age at the time of appointment; have 2 years relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted offenders; and have successfully completed the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP). At the discretion of the agency, relevant coursework or completion of corrections officer training in another jurisdiction may be substituted for some or all of the required COTP.
Minimum Competencies: The incumbent will possess strong organizational skills and have good grammar, oral and written communication skills. Applicants will be able to interact with co-workers, residents and outside personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Applicants will have the ability to comprehend, interpret and apply state statutes, regulations and general orders.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services. Must pass a physical exam, background investigation and submit a State of Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate.
