The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) is a dynamic, dedicated service agency that provides leadership, resources, support and accountability to the state’s K-12 education system. KSDE administers the state’s governance of education, standards and assessments, special education services, child nutrition and wellness, title programs and services, career and technical education, and financial aid. It is the goal of the agency to provide all Kansas children with equal access to a quality, high-level education that promotes student achievement and prepares all students for global success.

The department is governed by the Kansas State Board of Education, but the day-to-day administration of the agency is the responsibility of the Commissioner of Education, who is appointed by the Board of Education.

Position Summary & Responsibilities: The Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Learning Services provides leadership to the Kansas State Department of Education staff and state school districts in fulfilling the Kansas Board of Education’s mission and goals.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in education, public or business administration or related field. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.

Preferred Skills and/or Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in education, public or business administration or related field;
  • Experience as a school district superintendent or central office administrator in the areas of administration or curriculum and instruction;
  • Knowledge of educational research and practices, including state education programs, effective instructional and valid and reliable practices, curriculum and content standards, program standards, special education laws and regulations, technical education laws and regulations and educator licensure;
  • Knowledge of and vision for issues and trends in education;
  • Highly developed interpersonal, leadership, presentation and collaboration skills; and
  • Current Kansas teaching license.

Preferred Experience: Five years of administrative experience in public schools.
