The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) is an executive branch agency in charge of operating and regulating the use of state parks, state lakes, recreational grounds, wildlife areas and sanctuaries, fish hatcheries, natural areas, historic sites and other lands, waters, and facilities for the promotion of public health, safety, and for the use and pleasure of visitors. The agency is also charged with the development and conservation of wildlife and the natural resources within the state. The agency oversees 29 state parks, 500 miles of trails, approximately 460,301 acres of leased or owned public lands, management of four hatcheries, and four nature centers.

To meet our mission, projects, and goals, KDWP employs approximately 466 full time employees and up to 350 temporary employees, throughout the state, with diverse and varying skillsets. The largest agency office is the Operational Headquarters in Pratt, Kansas. The Office of the Secretary is maintained in Topeka, Kansas. There are three Regional Offices located in Topeka, Wichita, and Hays; three District Offices in Kansas City, Chanute, and Dodge City; and a Research Office located in Emporia, Kansas. Various wildlife, public land, and parks offices are located across the state.

KDWP has an annual budget of $110 million for Fiscal Year 2024. The agency is primarily funded through license fees, grants and federal funds that are provided through the Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson Acts.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: This unclassified, full-time position is located at El Dorado State Park, Parks Division; and is directly supervised by Shon Pinard, Assistant State Park Manager.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: The incumbent is responsible for coordinating and performing routine maintenance, repairing equipment, trucks, mowers, backhoes, various power tools, and shop equipment, including estimating costs, purchasing and actual repair; acts as lead worker and consultant on repair work; supervises four full-time employees and 5-8 seasonal maintenance staff; directs the work of subordinate personnel in the repair and upkeep of buildings, grounds and equipment; plans or assists in the planning and performing of maintenance and construction projects; plans and calculates material and manpower needs and costs; coordinates with contractors and checks for compliance; installs single or three phase electrical systems, automatic switches, controls, motors, and pumps involved in water and sewage disposal systems; constructs plumbing systems within park facility, including installing and repairing water and sewer lines, traps, showers, lavatories, and stools; repairs, replaces, adjusts electronic equipment, controls, gate valves, pumps, chemical feeders, chlorinators, and related equipment; mixes chemicals and takes water samples to test for compliance with KDHE requirements; maintains accurate records and submits paperwork on a timely basis; maintains working inventory; orders maintenance parts and carpentry supplies as needed.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required.

Licensing & Certification: The successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and pass a background check.

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required. Five years of experience in the mechanical or building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications: Prefer an extensive first-hand work experience for institutional and recreational facility upkeep and maintenance and understand and demonstrate basic noxious weed control processes.

Necessary Special Requirements: The selected candidate may be required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License and would be required to pass a State of Kansas Controlled Substance Test for Commercial Drivers prior to appointment. If so, the selected candidate would be subject to random testing for alcohol and controlled substances following employment.

Must be eligible to become certified for potable and wastewater treatment operation, chemical application certification, and have a working knowledge of: building trade and maintenance tools and ground maintenance and construction equipment, ADA requirements for public recreation facilities, and basic visitor safety standards as applied to a park/recreation environment.
