Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
This Safety Coordinator position is within the Division of Safety and is located in Topeka, Salina, or Chanute, KS. This position manages and coordinates the Safety Program for the Kansas Department of Transportation in Districts One, Two, and Four. The Safety Coordinator develops and coordinates safety training for KDOT personnel following administrative policies, and existing laws and regulations. This position inspects and provides consultative work in occupational and highway work zone safety.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide effective leadership to their assigned work unit.
- Coordinate activities related to KDOT’s Safety Program which includes developing and overseeing methods and procedures to be utilized by field safety personnel.
- Develop, update, and oversee written occupational safety and health programs to be used as a guide to inform employees of the hazards involved in their jobs.
- Assist in the development of written policies used to educate employees about safety requirements set by the safety office and Division Director.
- Observe and provide guidance to safety staff members on inspections of construction projects, maintenance work zones, and equipment maintenance shops.
- Work with safety staff to review and update the KDOT Safety Manual.
- Audit the Safety Data Sheet and SDS database to make sure it is kept up to date.
- Assemble and interpret personal injury and property damage accident data and analyze the results.
- Oversee training provided by the safety staff to educate field employees on safety and health topics.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Two years’ work experience in occupational safety programs.
- Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
- Ability to complete and pass OSHA 500 and 501 certifications.
- Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of OSHA and other safety standards and corrective techniques.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to develop solutions to complex environmental, health, and safety issues.
- Three years’ experience in safe work practices, accident prevention, industrial hygiene, or related field.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
