The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Mechanical Services, has a full-time vacancy for a Highway Maintainer III - TT (tractor trailer) operator.

Summary: Performs skilled year-round maintenance activities for the Bureau of Mechanical Services involving the operation, transportation and servicing of complex heavy equipment and machinery used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and emergency traffic services. Supervises and reviews the work of entry level personnel and small work crews performing tasks or projects for the NH State Highway System.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education

Education: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in the operation of motorized highway equipment.

License/Certification: Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL-A) with tank endorsement and no “O” restriction. The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the Department of Transportation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

As of June 23, 2020, offers of employment are conditional upon the individual obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless the candidate is currently employed by the State of New Hampshire.

Must receive a negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations and US DOT requirements.

Must be able to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on an intermittent basis.

Must have a telephone or acceptable means of communication and be available 24 hours per day.

All accountabilities must be conducted in full conformance with all risk management, safety, and environmental standards, regulations, and administrative orders.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates and maintains tractor trailer unit for the transportation of equipment to work sites or service locations including, but not limited to, backhoes, motor graders, and rollers. Operates all fleet equipment to load it onto trailers and/or ramp trucks.

Operates and troubleshoots complex highway maintenance/construction equipment, machinery, and/or vehicle components used in the construction and maintenance of the State Highway System, to include snow and ice removal and flood mitigation, road surface seasonal treatment operations, and for a wide range of road and highway maintenance projects and activities.

Performs rigging to secure equipment being transported to ensure proper load positioning and minimal load shifting during transport.

Rigs, uprights and retrieves errant heavy equipment to minimize further damage and prepare for transport.

Performs routine highway and roads maintenance activities under adverse conditions with exposure to high-speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and during disaster situations, to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Maintains assigned equipment and performs necessary field adjustments, emergency repairs and troubleshooting in order to ensure efficient and reliable operating condition and extended equipment life; reports issues and concerns to supervisor when appropriate.

Operates bucket loader having various attachments and other necessary equipment for snow removal. Cross-trains and operates other specialized equipment including the educator, yard cranes, and forklifts.

Responds immediately to perform winter maintenance and/or other traffic emergency activities as needed on a 24-hour per day basis, throughout the entire year.

Supervises, trains and reviews the work of small crews, entry level workers, and contractors to provide continuous transporting and other related services in the supervisor’s absence and to ensure maintenance work methods, safety standards, and environmental practices are being implemented in accordance with Department policy and with best management practices, while performing similar work. Works with immediate supervisor to address personnel issues and to recommend improvements in equipment and operations.

Traverses varying terrain and performs tasks that involve heavy physical labor such as drainage construction, building and equipment maintenance/repair; this includes the ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
