Job Description
Basic Purpose:
Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for conducting specialized training and staff development programs at an assigned correctional facility, at a training academy or for a department region/division. This includes evaluating and determining employee training needs, preparing required curriculum, and conducting training on various topics and skills.
Typical Functions:
- Conducts job analyses and assessments to evaluate employee training needs.
- Evaluates and develops curriculum, including lesson plans, participant manuals, videos, and graphics.
- Administrative work including scheduling and keeping records of training.
- Conducts classroom training, workshops or seminars to increase the knowledge and skills of employees in various subjects or tasks including pre-service and in-service training.
- Prepares weekly and/or quarterly training reports.
- Schedules and coordinates training sessions and locations.
- Coordinates department or division training or organizational development programs.
- Trains contracted staff, and occasionally manages contracts.
Level Descriptor:
Level I
This is the basic entry level at a facility or district. At this level employees perform routine professional level work in completing various training activities. This may include conducting various types of training using existing materials and plans, assisting in the development and coordination of training programs and maintaining training records.
Level II
This is the career level of this job family. Employees are assigned full responsibility for developing and conducting various types of training and related activities in a correctional
training program at a facility, unit, or district. This will include preparing any required lesson plans or other materials, conducting classes, workshops or seminars, evaluating participant results, preparing required reports and other related activities.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:
Level I
Knowledge, skills and abilities required at this level include knowledge of the principles and methods of employee training; of correctional security policies and procedures; and of various types of equipment used in adult education. Ability is required to conduct classroom training, workshops or seminars; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare lesson plans and other training materials; and to establish and maintain effective relationships with others. Correctional Training Officers should have good time management and organizational skills, as well as proficiency in applications such as spreadsheets and word processing.
Level II
Knowledge, skills and abilities required at this level include knowledge of the principles and methods of employee training; of correctional security policies and procedures; and of various types of equipment used in adult education. Ability is required to conduct classroom training, workshops or seminars; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare lesson plans and other training materials; and to establish and maintain effective relationships with others. Correctional Training Officers should have good time management and organizational skills, as well as proficiency in applications such as spreadsheets and word processing. At this level, employees should have a strong understanding of department policy and procedures.
Education and Experience:
Level I
Associate degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of correctional or security management, training, adult education or human resource development for each year of the required education.
Level II
Bachelor’s degree plus one additional year of qualifying experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of correctional or security management, training, adult education or human resource development for each year of the required education; or a master’s degree in adult education or human resource development.
NOTE: Correctional security management involves work at the lieutenant level and above. Experience must have been the primary responsibility in order to be considered as qualifying.
Preferred: Experience in a correctional or law enforcement environment.
Special Requirements:
Some positions may require that the applicant must have conducted a minimum of 80 hours of training as a certified subject matter instructor or subject matter expert instructor in firearms, CPR, First Aid, self-defense, etc., or become trained in such areas once hired.
This position may require a significant amount of driving, so applicants must be willing and able to perform the necessary travel; applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and retain a valid driver’s license while assigned to this job classification.
