Job Description
Basic Purpose
Positions in this job are responsible for the administration, direction, and management of the operational and administrative functions and activities for a correctional facility for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.
Typical Functions
- Responsible for the overall operational, management and administrative functions of a facility which includes programmatic services and activities provided to incarcerated individuals, such as correctional industries and agri-services, building and grounds maintenance, and agency business processes, such as budget and human resources.
- Develops and administers the facility’s budget, staff, physical resources, and other administrative functions in accordance with state and federal statutes, rules, policies and guidelines.
- Provides operational oversight to ensure all security, administrative and programmatic functions are carried out effectively, efficiently and in accordance with all applicable polices and guidelines.
- Responsible for the interpretation and application of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to operation of a facility.
- Serves on committees regarding a variety of department-related operations.
- Serves as a public relations contact for the facility as required.
Level Descriptor:
At this level, incumbents serve as Warden for a medium-sized correctional facility, performing all required duties and functions at the full-performance level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge, skills and abilities required at this level include knowledge of programmatic and administrative operations and functions of correctional and judicial systems; principles and practices of leadership; conflict management; and effective negotiation.
Skill required at this level includes skill in analyzing critical information to de-escalate situations; applying active listening techniques; building internal and external relationships and teams; and managing change.
Ability required at this level includes ability to provide positive motivation to achieve facility goals and objectives; make decisions based on fact; and effectively communicate to a variety of audiences on the various aspects and issues of a facility, its staff, and its population.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two years of professional level work experience in corrections for a government or private corrections agency or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and retain a valid driver’s license while assigned to this job.
Business-related overnight travel is required in the performance of this job.
