The overall objectives of the Program Manager – Environmental Education and Community Outreach position are to build community connections, foster connections with the natural world, promote stewardship of its resources, increase access to natural experiences, and cultivate curiosity. The primary responsibilities include planning, organizing, delivering, and directing the operations of Environmental Education and Community Outreach programs for the Muller Field Station. This includes both on-site and off-site programs as well as production of external communications materials. This position supervises, supports, and evaluates the performance of all education staff members. The Program Manager coordinates with regional K-14 education and community partners in scheduling and developing program.

Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) Education, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: Two years of outdoor, field-based science education or two years’ experience working with K-12 educators and students required. Ability to canoe and swim required. Effective organizational required. Enthusiasm for working with learners of all age and all abilities required. Knowledge of NYS Science Learning Standards and natural history preferred. Microsoft Office suite and graphic design software experience preferred

Essential Functions

  • Creates and develops educational materials, activities, and curricula that align with the New York State learning standards.
  • Serves as lead educator and delivers education programs.
  • Monitors and evaluates education programs performance develops modifications to systems and procedures as needed.
  • Builds relationships with area school districts, agencies, organizations, businesses, and community groups as ambassador for FLCC’s Environmental Conservation and Horticulture programs.
  • Manages environmental education program schedule (i.e., coordinate with education group leaders to determine dates, times, staffing needs, and program materials).
  • Supervises education staff including part-time educators and interns (i.e., manages staff schedules, prepares and updates training materials, leads training workshops, supports ongoing professional development, and provides feedback on staff performance).
  • Collaborates with FLCC Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM)/STEM camp coordinators and FLCC K-14 liaison to develop and deliver summer camp programming at the Muller Field Station.
  • Plans and conducts teacher and professional development summer workshops.
  • Creates and conducts both on- and off-site special events in collaboration with community partners (e.g., public hikes, paddles, community lectures, events, and workshops).
  • Promotes Muller Field Station through public speaking and outreach engagements.
  • Actively participates on internal (FLCC) and external community-based committees, working groups, and task forces.
  • Leads Field Station social media communications (e.g., Facebook and Instagram posts, YouTube videos, etc.) and the production of monthly Field Station newsletter with input from other College and Field Station staff.
  • Maintains accurate participant records and prepare year end usage reports.
  • Maintains tidy space in the Muller Lodge (e.g., classroom, meeting space, storage areas, kitchen, and bathrooms).
  • Prepares meeting and classroom spaces for programs by arranging chairs and tables, ensuring technology is functioning, restocking, and tidying bathroom facilities, and preparing refreshments as needed.
  • Prepares and manages fiscally responsible program budget (e.g., purchasing program supplies, event refreshments, etc.).
  • Coordinates with FLCC Foundation Staff in scheduling Muller Field Station rental usage for both day and overnight usage (e.g., non-profit organizations, for-profit businesses, government agencies, Scout groups, college classes, wellness offerings, internal and external retreats, etc.).
  • Collaborates with Field Station Manager and Field Station Director in design and maintenance of outdoor spaces, facilities, and supplies used for learning purposes (e.g., Garden, Boathouse, lean-to, canoes, paddles, life jackets, water sampling supplies, binoculars, etc.).
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and improvements of the Muller Field Station facility and operation plans, budgeting, and grant proposals in coordinate with required stakeholders (e.g., Safety Procedure Manual, Visitor’s Guide, Habitat Management Plan, rental use plans, capital improvement projects, etc.).

  • Ability to hike approximately two miles with a 25lb backpack.

Benefits And Salary Range

  • Competitive starting salary in the range of $56,968 to $61,474 and is commensurate with qualifications
