The conservation technician supports the museum’s conservation efforts by assisting with preventive care, minor treatments, documentation, and collections maintenance for the world’s most comprehensive collection of toys, dolls, board games, video games, and other historical materials related to play. Working under the direct supervision of the conservator, the conservation technician ensures that museum objects are properly handled, stored, and documented in accordance with professional conservation standards. This position also contributes to exhibition preparation and general conservation lab upkeep while following museum policies and ethical guidelines.
Essential Duties :
- Perform minor preventive conservation treatments on collections items under the direction of the conservator.
- Follow all museum-issued storage and conservation policies and procedures to ensure the safety and longevity of the collection. Handle objects according to best practices for museum conservation, using appropriate materials and techniques.
- Perform work in alignment with the American Institute for Conservation’s (AIC) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice and American Alliance of Museum’s (AAM) Code of Ethics for Museums .
- Maintain thorough and accurate records of conservation examinations, treatments, photo documentation, loans, etc., including using the museum’s collections management system.
- Assist with the digitization of conservation records and ensure hardcopy data is properly cataloged in the museum’s collections management system.
- Conduct condition assessments and monitoring of museum objects in storage and exhibit spaces.
- Support environmental monitoring efforts such as assessing and reporting temperature, humidity, and light levels to ensure optimal conditions.
- Perform routine maintenance of collections storage and exhibit areas, including dusting, vacuuming, replacing lights, and monitoring object placement and condition.
- Assist in re-housing and improving storage solutions for objects to enhance their long-term stability.
- Assist the conservator and other team members during exhibit installations and deinstallations.
- Help maintain organization and inventory of conservation and storage supplies.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and professional workspace and contribute to general conservation studio / lab maintenance.
- Attend collections team and general staff meetings, and others, as requested.
