What are the responsibilities and job description for the Security Supervisor (Part-time) position at The Strong?
The Strong is one of the most visited attractions in upstate New York and is committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all guests and staff. The security supervisor oversees the work of security officers, assists in the preparation and implementation of emergency management, and enforces museum and security processes and procedures to ensure the protection and security of museum assets, employees, and guests.
This position requires a background in security or law enforcement and an unwavering commitment to maintaining the safety and security of people and property.
The schedule is part-time, typically 20-25 hours per week, and the final candidate must have availability on Saturdays and Sundays across all three shifts.
Essential Duties:
- In the absence of the director of security:
- Oversee the security and safet y of the museum facility, guests, and staff through monitoring and directing the work of the security officers. Lead the response to routine safety and security issues and consult with the director of security regarding resolution of issues of a non-routine nature.
- Ensure staffing levels are adequate to meet team deliverables; adjust individual officer schedules as appropriate and when needed, be available to work additional hours to cover unanticipated absences and special events.
- Supervise the work of the security officers and lead officers by assigning and overseeing daily post duties, providing real-time coaching and redirection as needed, and documenting actions as appropriate. Escalate ongoing performance concerns to the director of security.
- Meet the requirements for and maintain a valid New York State security guard license and maintain certification by the American Heart Association in first aid, CPR, and AED training for adults and children. Complete NARCAN training as instructed.
- Consistently adhere to museum and security-specific policies and procedures relating to the protection and security of museum assets, employees, guests, and others. This includes proactively identifying risks, enforcing access control requirements, overseeing visitor procedures, managing the log, and handling the distribution and collection of badges.
- Conduct routine security tours of the building, grounds, and parking garage and monitor closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs). Observe, identify, report and address safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage.
- Maintain a current NYS driver’s license that is free of significant violations (see museum policy for specifics) to allow for exterior patrol in a security vehicle.
- Encourage, through prompt follow up and positive reinforcement, non-security staff behavior that portrays an awareness that security is the responsibility of all museum staff.
- Provide outstanding service to museum visitors and ensure that all guests are appropriately identified, logged, and monitored throughout their visit.
- Collaborate with guest services staff as appropriate to respond to security and safety issues such as guest injury and illness, conflict resolution, and inappropriate guest behaviors.
- Investigate incidents, as assigned, and prepare reports and other related documentation of all findings and resolutions.
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of emergency management and contingency planning, and act as liaison to first responders as necessary.
- Operate, monitor, and communicate via a two-way radio connecting various museum teams including security, guest services, environmental services, facilities, and public programs. The radio must always be worn when working.
- Maintain a thorough understanding and working knowledge of all building security systems, including access control, the Evolv weapons detection system, CCTV system, and ZeroEyes.
- Respond with sensitivity to the emotional and practical needs of museum guests and staff, and treat everyone with dignity and respect.
- Foster a welcoming and supportive environment for new security staff by leading their orientation and training. Introduce them to the museum facility, team members, and staff while ensuring a positive and engaging onboarding experience at The Strong.
- Establish positive working relationships with museum staff, security vendors, police, fire department and other emergency responders.
- Take initiative to identify problems and communicate with team members, superiors, and staff from other teams to find solutions and improve efficiency and quality of processes and services. Publicly support team decisions, even if they conflict with personal opinions.
- Open availability including an ongoing ability to work all three weekend shifts to provide supervision and cover gaps in staffing.
- Attend routine safety training to remain up-to-date on the conditions and requirements of the job.
- Identify and act on opportunities to help and support the work efforts of team members.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The candidate may have any combination of education and experience, but should possess the required skills and knowledge for successful performance. Our general minimum requirements are:
- Associate degree in criminal justice or closely related field.
- Three-five years of supervisory experience, at a corporate facility or public venue preferred.
- Stron g verbal and written communication skills.
- Exper ience accurately preparing and maintaining records, files, and reports.
- Working knowledge of security and fire/life safety systems.
- Experience investigating and writing incident reports and making independent, reasonable decisions within proper policies and procedures.
- Ability to understand and follow standard operating procedures and to perform duties in a professional manner.
- Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license.
- Possession of a valid New York State security guard license.
- Possession of or ability to obtain valid American Heart Association CPR and first aid certifications.
- Must be able to complete NARCAN training.
- Must consent to and pass a drug screen and background check as conditions of employment.
